I got the RF 100-500 a while back but am going to use the EF 100-400 for my next football game just to try it again. I’ve got the 1.4x and 2x converters and can add those if I feel Iike I need some distance. Anyone else still have some EF lenses that they’ve gone back to and like more than the RF? I just haven’t been quite ready to sell the EF 100-400 yet - this might do it for me! We’ll see!!

I have both EF and RF. I use my EF 100-400 and EF 70-200 with an adaptor all the time. I have no intention of replacing them with RF versions. Recently, I started using my old, first gen EF 300 f/2.8 with an adaptor, and it works better than it did on an EF mount body.

There is a firmware update (1.0.7) for the EF 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6 II which improves tracking performance when used with R mount cameras. I put it on there long after I’d bought the RF 100–500 and stopped regularly using the lens, but I did test it briefly after the update and there’s a definite improvement. I think you need a modern camera to update the lens firmware: my 1Ds Mk III couldn’t do it, but my R3 could, using the EF–RF adaptor.

Heresy! The EF 100-400 is an honest f/5.6, not one of these newfangled f/6.3 ML thingies.

I sold my EF 100-400II a couple of years ago after I bought the 100-500, but there are some things I liked better about the EF lens. My uses for the lens are probably different than yours, but I really miss not having the distance window on the lens to consult. I use(d) both lenses frequently for wildflowers and larger insects like butterflies and dragonflies often with extension tubes. I miss not being able to manually rough focus by looking at the distance window (or whatever it's called) on the lens for close up work. I also much prefer using the better made Canon EF tubes than the flimsy aftermarket tubes available for RF lenses.

Well spotted. f/6.3 is the speed of the new lens at 400mm.

The old lens at 400mm with a 1.4× teleconverter was f/8, which meant the old 1-series bodies like mine could autofocus, albeit only the centre point. Also, at 400mm and f/5.6, all the focus points on the 1D(s) Mk III work, but are only sensitive to horizontal lines.

Oh, I'm still a sucker for the oldest 100-400, even on a Nikon body. I like it a lot, though if Tamron was ever to release their 50-400 in Z mount, I'd probably look at it sometime down the line...

... that despite it being f/6.3 at the long end (or really everywhere past 158mm, they say).

I've had my R6 for over 2 years now and still don't own any RF lenses. EF lenses work great on the R6.
