I love bears, have been to Katmai National Park over 10 times in the past 10 years; this year going in July & Sept. So far I have only explored Brooks Falls (and McNeil Game Sanctuary), and am now thinking about venturing out more. This year was a bit unusual year, fish was running less than it has in the past 3-4 years and I was in a funk, not wanting to get into the river even though I had my waders on all days. Then a group of five very generous pros insisted I join them and was able to capture this series. C&C is always appreciated. I am a long time lurker and admirer of the beautiful photos shared here. Series with canon R5 with 400 f2.8 RF + 1.4x, ISO 1600, F4, 1/1600

Goodness these are wonderful shots!

If you haven't been there, you need to visit Silver Salmon Creek Lodge at Lake Clark Natl. Park in Alaska -- it's an incredible Bear shooting experience.

By the way, I live in Austin also.

Awesome images, I have also visited Katmai 10 times, Brooks Falls, Halo Bay and Kinak Bay. Wish I could go back, but old age is restricting my adventures. There is no place like Katmai for once in a lifetime experience . Bruce

Yes this time, though often many of the same folks go there mid sept. I like to be there the last week that lodge is open, it makes the trip that much more enjoyable.

Greg, I have only been to Brooks in Katmai and McNeil; Finally thinking of starting to explore other areas. The Silver Salmon Creek lodge sounds interesting, I have seen their website, but it seems that you go as a group and come back as a group? I love brooks because it gives me the flexiblity to wander around, often be by myself.

I would love to catch up in person over a cup of coffee or lunch, lmk if this is something that you are up for. I know a few of the regular photogs in town but I dont think our paths have crossed.

Bruce, great to hear from a fellow Katmai lover. I have only been to brooks,but am now thinking about exploring Halo Bay and cross winds. I did not have Kinak Bay on my radar, will check that out. Any words of advice?

What a great idea- I went to Lake Clark wand went late for bears with fish. I will use you idea for Brooks Falls. How tough is it to book rooms at Brooks? Do you book thru the park or the government?

Great images...man, I miss Alaska...

...missed the trip in 2023, but was up there the last three years...

And great to see some very close Texan photographers...I am just south of Austin, in Schertz, TX (just north of San Antonio)...

We might need to make a Texan to Alaska trip...

I camp - it requires reservation and typically sells out very fast, but often becomes available later on as you get closer to sept. Last lodge closing, camping is very available.

To stay in lodge, you have to book through Bristol bay adventures / Katmai land and it requires lottery win to get a room. Lottery is typically 2 years in advance. I have never entered but happy to get more details if you are interested.

Scott - I’m looking forward to spending my full summers / falls there once I’m empty nester. Texas /Alaska is my perfect combo. Lmk if you are interested in joining; health permitting I go every year sometimes 2-3 times.
