Hello folks,

Long story short, the hood of my 100-400L (the original) was lost, and it's a little difficult to find locally now because the lens has been discontinued a while ago. However, I know that many "83 gauge" (EW-/ET-83) might fit: I've been using the EW-83K from the 24/1.4 L II as a replacement, and it fits decently, although not perfectly - but it is pretty short. I thought they were all okay but evidently the EW-83F from the 24-70/2.8 first-gen - which is quite a bit deeper - did NOT fit at all.

If I fail to find a ET-83C designed for this lens, which other ones might be a good fit? EW-83J from the 17-55/2.8? Or even the ET-83D from the second generation 100-400?

Aren't there a ton of ET-83C knockoffs out there? There are on Amazon. Considering the current geopolitical circumstances I'm not sure what challenges you face sourcing these knockoffs. But if you can find a China-based supplier, might it be an option?

Thanks, I know. It's not a problem to get a hold of a knock-off, I just wanted specifically to avoid this because I remember some of them being kludgy. Like, when I tried one for my 24-85 and barely managed to take it back off without wringing the lens's neck.

P.S. In my experience, Amazon sucked with delivering stuff here even long before the current unpleasantness. I tried ordering books from them and they failed to deliver. At least the money was refunded.

The 100-400L IS II Mk II is one of my most-frequently used lenses. I didn't like the door on the Canon hood, and so I bought a JJC ET-83C hood on eBay. It's for the Mk I, but it fits both Mk I and Mk II. The JJC hood has been on the lens since 2015. I've also used many other generic hoods, on non-L lenses (esp. EF-S and EF-M), and I think Vello and JJC are both good.

P.S. 83 is the hood mounting diameter in mm.
