That linked product is a great illustration of the problems with the idea of a film-replacing sensor unit for old 3mm
For one thing, that product puts a MFT sensor into a 35mm camera — so you’d need all new (and much wider!) lenses to get it to work the way you would typically expect. (The crop factor for MFT is 2x, so you’d need to find a 25mm lens to give you the familiar angle-of-view of a 50mm lens, and getting the AOV equivalent of a 28mm lens would require 14mm.)
For one more relevant data point, consider the trajectory of MF digital backs. Originally, pretty much all serious MF digital systems were built around these backs, often used with old film MF bodies. They were large, extremely expensive, and had some technical limitations, but for a while were the only MF options. But once camera vendors figured out how to provide purpose-built MF and miniMF digital cameras, that fully integrated with the camera’s software and hardware and lenses, and do so at a much lower price…
… the digital backs were largely limited to a very small, speciality market. (Most who had shot MF film either moved to FF digital or the smaller and less expensive miniMF systems.)
This is one of those intriguing concepts that, for better or worse, is never going to be widely adopted. Like many of you, I have warm fond feelings about various film cameras that I used over the decades. I have no doubt that a few people will be interested… but as I pointed out above, this is not a market that Canon will ever enter, nor is it going to be more than a tiny niche even with third-party vendors.
