The people that want more and more megapixels in their camera with because they want to make LARGE prints seem to forget that 25 years ago 4” x 6” prints were considered JUMBO!!!
I recently started digitizing some of my old film and came across this. I just had to laugh!

Yes, but to get the larger prints one had to move past 35mm and into 4x5 and larger…so nothing really changed. If one’s goal is 6x4 prints then yes you don’t need very many pixels…just like 35mm film was fine.

Mavicas were 640x480 and took the image about 2 months after pressing the shutter. I as using an N80 at the time. Then it took a while to record on the floppy.

It was a friend's camera. Never touched one again until the D70. Sam's club would do 5x7 and the photo dept gaveme the 6x9s they were croppd frm

My local Costco did excellent printing and I was sad to see all their in-store labs close. Maybe they were advertising 4x6 foot prints!

More megapixels isn't just for larger prints. With 40+MP and good glass it can allow you to crop into an image to a pretty extreme degree. Which means maybe not needing to bring a lens with so much reach. Or bringing that faster shorter focal length lens in low light where some action is present.

I shoot mostly landscapes, currently with a Z6. Occasionally I miss the 36 Mpx of my D810, mostly when I need to crop some. Anything more than that is not needed for my use mode. Recently printed a 40x60 gatorboard from a Z6 image and it came out fine. When the Z6-3 finally comes out I will probably buy it if it is 36mpx, otherwise I will sit tight. The Z7 already has too many pixels for my needs.

The resolution of the lens is probably more important than the resolution of the sensor nowadays. 24MP to 36MP is only a 23% increase in resolution.

Exactly right! I came from 36 MP with Nikon F lenses to 45MP and Z lenses. The Z lenses are amazing the resolution about doubled despite that the increase from 36 to 45 is not that much.

With the F-lenses on 36 MP and F trinity you could clearly see the shortcomings at edges. Not so with Z trinity at 45 MP.

I think it's easy to forget the amazing pictures that have been taken throughout the years with far "less capable" equipment than available now. We get too caught up with megapixels and sensors and resolutions but truth is amazing pictures can be taken with any camera from the last 5 decades or more. In fact, I think as technology advances it takes less and less skill to take great looking pictures. But I digress, I do like more MP for the cropping, it's amazing sometimes what these lenses and cameras capture from a distance.

Digital has really changed how people view large prints. I have worked on numerous large prints with old black and white film that are very grainy up close but make a great addition to a room when viewed from several feet away.

I went from from a 15-year-old point-and-shoot camera to a new body with an expensive interchangeable lens and the difference was jarring. The new camera also makes my mistakes - missed focus, camera shake, diffraction, etc. - much more obvious, so it has actually made made me more mindful of the proper techniques. I think when you have more capable equipment, it will push you even more to get the most out of it.
