Heated gloves

Winter is on the way. I have been to Yellowstone in winter a few times and frostbit my shutter finger last time… does anyone have recommendations for heated gloves or glove liners vs gloves? I do use hot hands in my gloves, but fingers still get cold. Big bulky gloves obviously are difficult to operate back buttons etc.

Any thoughts on gloves by the Heat Company? Again several liners to choose from, which is best… they are so expensive I hate to choose wrong if I go that way.
I have small women’s hands!!!
Thank you

Wear gloves with the shutter button finger tip cut off. When finger is not on the shutter button pull your finger back down into the glove and on to the 'hot hand'.

Works for me in -30 to -40.

Look into gun shooter's gloves. I've seen gloves with a cut in the trigger finger of the glove that stays pretty closed, until you want to shoot. Their kind of shooting is different, but the need is very similar.

My standard has been a synthetic glove liner inside a windproof polartec glove with the finger tips cut off. Then I put a chemical heat pad between the two gloves on the back of my hand. Klim makes some liners that are goretex as well as without. Like north face glove liners too. Electric gloves I have were from cabela's but only have used for snowmobiling. Theyw were made for cabelas by gerbing.

Heat company I prefer the gloves were the liner and glove are separate gloves. Swany makes a glove with a side zip that I like as you can expose just the index finger or all of the fingers depending on what you need.

I use a pair of light weight, windproof gloves under a pair of large Baffin gloves; https://www.baffin.com/products/glovu008

My hands get cold. I’ve tried the Heat Company gloves without success. Next, battery powered glove lines with mixed results. Name a glove and I’ve purchased and tried them.

A couple of years ago I ordered Vallerett Gloves. Although my hands still get somewhat cold I can still push the camera buttons. I gave up on the small heat packs. They don’t help me. I do use battery powered handwarmers. I put one inside an inner pants pocket and one in a coat pocket to warm a cold hand. The hand warmer in my pant’s pocket helps keep my body a bit warmer.

I get cold easily and yes, jealous of the people who stay warm.

Good luck, I hope you find the right gloves

not used in the field but I know people who like the usb battery powered handwarmers. Of course you have to stick you hand into a pocket that has the handwarmer
I have a hand muffler from cabelas but have never needed. You could put the handwarmer in it.
The warming store on the internet is a good source of winter stuff

I like these when it gets really cold.

For shooting when it's not too frigid, I like these.

Here's a timely review for you by a professional photographer who works in winter conditions:
https://shuttermuse.com/photography-gloves/

In a previous post on this topic I mentioned the following:
I just dropped off my Heat Company mitts to pay someone with sewing skills to remove the zippers and reverse their direction, so I can keep the zipper mostly closed while sticking out only my index finger to operate my camera. It boggles my mind that the Heat Company didn't think of that detail. I also found it more effective to put the chemical heat warmers in the main part of the mitt rather than the dedicated pouch. The reversed zippers will help prevent them from falling out.

But in place of chemical heat warmers, I now have heated gloves from Motion Heat (https://www.motionheat.ca), which I have not had a chance to try yet because we haven't had very cold weather yet. My neighbour has a pair and loves them, and he used to work on metal objects outside. I intend to use the gloves inside the Heat Company mitts when it's really cold.

heat packs work best for me. If you can keep your wrist and back of your hand warm then your fingers tend to stay warm, too.

My takes

1/Cutoff fingers permanently impair the insulating abilities of the glove

2/Depending on how far away from shelter you are, batteries and wires can be a liability. A heatpack will always work and you can carry spare(s)

3/Mitts are A LOT more effective than gloves

4/Whether you choose mitts or gloves make sure you have fairly heavy duty wind-resistant liners instead of cut-off fingers

5/Gloves and claw-type mitts will often allow you to operate the basic camera controls without having to take them off

6/Sometimes heavy winter gloves will have heater pack pockets that help keep it in place

7/Whenever possible I prefer to buy gloves with liners designed specially for them, it is a cleaner fit

My setup

Down to around 0F these work great (I have a previous version). They come with great liners
https://www.outdoorresearch.com/products/mens-arete-ii-gore-tex-gloves-300013?variant=46252583223617

When the temperatures drop further I will often reach for these. They are mitten style so they tend to keep the hands warmer. The split finger helps operate the shutter and larger buttons on the camera, however it will often get cold
https://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/product/soloist-finger/

Under -20F one needs the big guns. For me these are the MH Absolute Zero. If they don't keep you warm nothing will. The leashes are surprsingly flimsy given how much these gloves cost. Since they are down filled (with a goretext liner) they are intended to be used only at very low temperatures where there is hardly any moisture in the environment

YOU PUT TOGETHER A REALLY GREAT SUMMARY. ANOTHER TIP WAS PUBLISHED BY GALEN ROWELL MANY YEARS AGO. YOU GET DR SCHOLL'S MOLE FOAM (I LIKE THE ONE WITH A FOAM CENTER WITH FELT COVERING) AND STICK IT ON THE PLACES WHERE YOUR HAND HOLDS OR GRIPS THE CAMERA. iT BREAKS THE CONDUCTIVITY OF HEAT FROM YOUR HAND TO THE CAMERA BODY. IT DOES HELP.

CUTTING OFF FINGER TIPS DOES REDUCE INSULATION. ON THE OTHER HAND YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE GLOVE OFF TO PRESS/OPERATE CAMERA BUTTONS ETC. YOU ONLY CUT OFF THE VERY TIP SAY THE FINGER JOINT RIGHT BEHIND THE FINGERNAIL. DON'T CUT THE LINER. i STARTED WITH CLIMBING GLOVES WHICH HAD THEM ALL CUT. DEPENDING ON HOW YOU OPERATE YOUR CAMERA YOU MAY ONLY NEED THE INDEX FINGER.

ELECTRIC GLOVES HAVE POTENTIAL ISSUES, BUT I'VE NEVER HAD ANY. CARRY SPARE BATTERIES. I STILL RELY ON CHEMICAL HEAT PACKS UNLESS ON SNOWMOBILE BUT THAT HAS TO DO WITH BULK IN OPERATING CAMERA. THERE IS A cANADIAN COMPANY THAT MAKES ELECTRICALLY HEATED GLOVE LINERS PRIMARILY FOR BICYCLES. HAVE THEM BUT NEVER USED.

MITTS ARE WARMER THAN GLOVES AS FINGERS PROVIDE HEAT FOR ONE ANOTHER. THATS WHY MANY PEOPLE USE MITTS LIKE THE HEAT COMPANY OR SWANY ETC THAT ALLOW YOU TO FOLD BACK THE TIP OF THE MITT TO EXPOSE YOUR FINGER TIPS. I'VE USED A SHOOTING MITT THAT IS SIMILAR TO ONE YOU POSTED. ALSO CALLED A LOBSTER MITT. ANOTHER WAY TO GO IS A LIGHT RAB DOWN MITT. ON THE ONES I HAVE, YOU CAN PRESS YOUR FINGER THROUGH THE INSULATION SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE MITT OFF IN ORDER TO PRESS BUTTONS.

EXTENDING THE CAMERA BUTTONS HELPS. I ORIGINALLY USED VERY SMALL PLASTIC FURNITURE BUMPERS. SHUTTERBANDS MADE THESE (BUTTONBUMPS) FOR SPECIFIC CAMERAS BUT I THINK THEY MAY HAVE DISCONTINUED THE PRODUCT. IT DOES WORK

MANY GLOVE LINERS NOW HAVE FINGER TABS THAT LET YOU OPERATE YOUR PHONE OR TOUCH SCREEN ON BACK OF CAMERA. NOT SURE HOW WELL THAT WORKS

Insulation for the camera is a an interesting idea though not sure how to implement it. However insulation for the tripod is an absolute must. I use cheap split pipe insulation from Home Depot taped with this

used to get camo hunting bow tape from LLRues catalog to hold on pipe insulation. Lately have been using amazon
AIRSSON Camouflage Tape Cling Scope Wrap Military Camo Stretch Bandage Gun Rifle Shotgun Camping Hunting 2" x 177" x 6 yds Self-Adhesive

Don't have long term experience with it.

to insulate camera I use
Dr. Scholl's Molefoam Padding 4 1/8” x 3 3/8” cutting pieces and shapes to fit where my fingers touch/grip the camera when photographing. These are meant to go on you skin and I've never had any damage to camera finish. Remove at end of season. Been using for many years.

Windproof material is worth it. Heat loss in wind is a killer.

I find that mittens keep my hands much warmer than regular gloves. I use the mittens with fingers exposed and the mitt folds over the fingers. North Dakota winters and this works well while running a snowblower as well as photographing. Even in 40 below temperatures.

If needed i can put a chemical heating pack in the mitten ends and keep fingers toasty. Trappers fur hats work very well for me and help a lot to keep me warm and functioning. Add in a face covering/balaclava/face mask in the cold and all is well.

Hard part at times is remembering DO NOT BREATHE on the rear screen of the digital camera as it ices up almost immediately in the cold.
