@BastianK has posted a very informative comparison of six super-fast 50mm M-mount lenses (f/1.2 and faster) over at Phillip Reeve's blog:

Just a reminder that Fred also compared a few super-fast 50s not in Bastian's comparison as part of his VM 50/1.0 review, including the Leica 50/1 Noctilux, TTA 50/0.95 and Sony FE 50/1.2 GM.

Bastian's comparison includes: Leica 50/0.95 Noctilux, Zhong Yi 50/0.95 M, Voigtländer VM 50/1.0 Nokton, MS-Optics 50/1.0 ISM, Mr. Ding 50/1.1 and Voigtländer VM 50/1.2 Nokton.

I have been following Phillip Reeve's blog for a while, thank you for the heads up on this latest comparison.

What a great comparison. So cool to finally see someone measure the T-stops of these super-fast 50s, which is one thing I've always wondered about. I finished the review wanting to get my hands on both the Zhong Yi and the VM 1.0—the former as an extreme "character" lens and the latter as the ultimate walk-around 50.

Wow. Just fantastic work. (and motivates me to mount my VC 50mm 1.2 this evening.)

Great comparison - I was very interested to read between both Voigtlander variants. I only missed the TTArtisan 50/0.95 in this comparison. Personally I am not interested in the two more exotic lenses in this test like Zhong Li and Mr. Ding. But also good to see them in this comparison.

Excellent stuff as always!

Re. the CV 50 1.2:

Despite being nominally slower, this lens also lets more light in than either the Zhong Yi or the Mr. Ding.

As a film shooter, that is my primary reason to buy a fast lens. It seems the CV 50 1.2 and 1.0 are the clear winners for me.

Great comparison, thanks Bastian! Up to your usually rigorous standards. The comparisons are always best in the biz, and so easy to really see the difference between lenses.

I'm a bit surprised that, to my eye, the CV50/1.2 won basically every battle, including bokeh. Impressive lens!

I've compared the Voigtlander 50/1 Nokton to the TTA 50/0.95 for resolution and contrast here:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1741370/13#infinity4

I can't recall if I also compared their rendering qualities, but one notable advantage of the TTA 50/0.95 is that it handles field curvature very well, similar to the CV 50/1.2, which I consider a top performer. If someone doesn't require the f/1.2 aperture, the Leica 50/1.4 Lux performs even better, especially at close distances. In my opinion, their rendering is quite similar.

Personally, I tend to favor the Leica 50/1 Noctilux because of its unique image rendering. However, it's important to mention that it comes with a high price tag. Another lens with a similar character is the CV 50/1.1 Nokton and the price is amazingly low for a used copy.

Excellent work, Bastian! Thanks!

I am thankful for the affirmation of my choice to buy the Cosina Voigtalnder Nokton f/1.0 VM. While the Nokton f/1.2 does, indeed, appear to be the better all-‘rounder, I planned to keep my Summilux-M ASPH, my Summicrons, and, also figured (correctly) that I would be adding the APO Lanthar 50mm Aspherical, sooner or later. (One can never have too many Fifties... )

Edited to add: I also appreciate the affirmation of my decision against buying a Noctilux f/0.95, which was part of deciding to buy the Nokton f/1.

Lots of works--Thanks Bastian.

I do have a Sypoptic 50/1.1, and I appreciate it was cheap, works equally on M or E or film and very smooth bokeh, but images often feel flat to me. I enjoy 50/1 Noct and ZM 50/1.5.

For my preferences, if I wanted a smooth, fast, well corrected 50, I'd take the 50 Lux (was too expensive for me to keep) or the CV 50/1.2 after that. I wouldn't take the CV 50/1 over the 50/1.2 for the reasons your comps shows.

I love the CV 50/1.2 and shoot it on my Leica and Sony (with Techart EA9).

+1 to the Bastian's good work to bring us the comps.

I would like to see Fred's mention of the Leica 50/1.4 Lux included (as a reference of sorts) with the faster lenses to see how things change with the challenges of producing the faster glass.

There's also the reissued Leica 50 f/1.2 ASPH, which is another ultra fast option. However, I personally prefer the way the Noctilux 50/1 renders and its overall performance. Both of these lenses can be quite expensive, even when bought used. But it seems that Light Lens Lab is planning to launch a replica of the Leica 50/1.2 later this year, and it's expected to be more budget-friendly.

I haven't ever preferred the 50/1.2 draw over the 50/1 Noct, the OG or re-issue, so no real interest in the LLL. I would be really interested in 75 or 80 Lux replicas though

Or even a 50/1. If it's good enough (or preferable to me), I'd be happy to dump my 50 Noct and get 4k back.

It appears that the reissued Leica 50/1.2 ASPH. lens is quite popular, but I agree with you, and I would have preferred it if LLL had made a replica of the 50/1 lens instead. I currently own a v3 but have tried all versions except for v1.
