I’m considering using my ipad Pro as a back up device while traveling and would appreciate your thoughts. I don’t plan on editing while traveling, just want the ability to import files with incremental backups locally, not on the web and was looking at LR for that. I’ve used the files app but it is cumbersome and doesn’t offer incremental backups.

Is this practical? What else should I consider?

Thanks!

You don't need LR to import photos, just plug a card reader into the data port of your ipad.

My Adobe Plan restricts LR mobile to 20GB cloud storage. I used my iPad this summer for backup and culling/editing some files in LR. LR will notify you that you've reached your storage limit once you hit that ceiling and will stop syncing to the cloud but will keep importing new files. I've had 48GB of photos in my library and just imported the files from the card once we got home. I then upgraded to 1TB of storage for one month and cancelled the plan to have the files synced to my LR Classic catalog.

Another option would be to try the Sony iOS app and see if that works better than the Files App for a simple backup.

Another thing to consider in case you don't want to edit or culll your files on the go and you have the new iPhone 15 Pro/Max you could also bring just the phone and forgo the iPad. Same connection with the same speeds as the M1/M2 iPads.

Thanks, but using the files app is painful without incremental backup.

Thank you, my desire would be to do local backups only, not in the cloud so I'm not sure how that works.

being that just about every method is somewhat lacking using these devices the few times i have done it with my ipad was just keeping it simple. i have a Hyper 6 in 1 USBc hub that functions on a few devices.

it supports SD cards direct and has a USBc input for either external power or or card reader and it works for my CFexpress B cards.

what it is not:
it is not fast, and you do one operation at a time manually and effectively. load in, rename, swap out a USBc memory device and send it out to it. it is not elegant but i'm not particularly in a hurry. it may possibly run better on the latest and greatest models. it will always be outperformed by a reasonable good 11" laptop. so, its where are you willing to compromise.

So I’ve tried LR Mobile (just called LR?) and it does what I want although it takes some work. Thanks everyone for the help!

FYI - I found a better answer, FE File Explorer App for Ipad works well, allows incremental backup as well.
