While it was not unexpected given the focus on RF mount APS-C bodies, it is nevertheless disappointing. EOS M offers a very nice compact system which the RF mount APS-C doesn't offer.

Sharing the mount with FF means the bodies have to be larger because the mount is much larger, and at the same time there is less focus on dedicated APS-C lenses since FF lenses can be used on APS-C bodies.

Surprising. The M apparently a big seller in Japan. Although it is hard to take this too seriously, since the "M is dying" threads on here probably started in 2015, if not sooner.

The APC-C RF gear is getting down there in size. I just went to camerasize.com and found:

R50Mk2 + 18-55 - 598g
R100 + 18-45 = 486g

For 100g and 1.5" longer, you can carry the R100 + 18-150 @ 666g.

It's not like there has been much focus on EF-M lenses anyway, so that's probably a wash. In a shrinking market, it makes sense to consolidate onto one interchangeable system and plug a few holes in the lineup rather than maintain two incompatible systems.

The writing was there on the wall for quite a while. Now, the main question (I guess...) is whether the good primes from that system are going to be ported over to RF-S. Normally, it would've been a no-brainer, but Canon might just decide that heaven forbid the RF-S (sub)system might get any excellent lenses that would compel the users NOT to upgrade to FF.

I'm not bothered

I own all the EF-m lenses plus a few duplicates. Have the Sigma 1.4 triplet (16,30 & 56) several Chinese manual lenses from 4mm to 55mm plus M42 adapters. Body wise I have every model except M200 (will probably pick one up soon)

Needless to say, I like the M system. They are small and beautifully made. The fact Canon has discontinued matters not a jot to me.

Let's see how the R aps-c fares in comparison. Yes it's better ( obviously) but my guess is many liked the M system because it bridged the gap between phone and full blown camera buff.

I bailed on the M system in 2016 because it was obvious Canon was never going to expand the EF-M lens catalog to an acceptable level. Then when the RF mount was announced in 2018 and it was wholly incompatible with the EF-M mount my suspicions were confirmed. Ever since then the sunsetting of the M system has been obvious to anyone who paid attention.

More like you heard it so often, you quit believing it.

M never made sense to the average FM'er, myself included. Still a bestseller.

By the way the situation reminds me of the demise of the Samsung NX system, which was - in my opinion - a much more regrettable casualty because that system actually had a lot of good lenses, including a 16-50/2-2.8, a few fast primes and no less than three pancakes.
Well... The road of camera evolution is littered with the corpses of dead systems, they say.

The bodies are listed as discontinued, which is not a surprise as Canon is probably nearly done with the DIGIC 8 processors all the recent M cameras used.

Put another way: wait until Canon tells you the system is dead, unequivocally. All camera systems eventually are discontinued or will be.

Does this mean I have to stop using my EOS 1V and Elan 7S? Both were discontinued years ago. I do lament the passing of EF lenses that has gone along with the passing of the EOS DSLR. I like a handful of camera. The M never fit that bill.

To me, it made sense as a small system alternative to DSLRs and a way to dip a toe into MILC while being able to use EF/EF-S lenses. It had a lot of potential but Canon never intended to make it realized.

The latter will be the case. No RF-s 32mm f/1.4. And yes, because of that reason you've mentioned.

But the new wide angle zoom goes up to only 18mm in stead of 22, so the magic combo of 11-22mm+32mm+55-200 wouldn't be possible anyway due to a too big gap from 18mm to 32mm.

To me the M system was the most inspiring aps-c system from Canon, and RF-s won't change that. And if somebody starts from scratch today choosing between a used R or a new R10 I think it's hard to beat the first option.

While this was expected, it's still a shame. I had an M50 and a few EF-M lenses for a few years. It was a great setup for traveling light. The system never took off here in North America, although it was quite popular in Japan. Knowing this was coming, though, I sold off my M50 and three EF-M lenses earlier this year to fund a Canon R10 and a RF-S 18-150mm lens. While the R10 is a little bigger than the M50, I like its ergonomics much more -- plus the auto focus system is a major improvement.

Rumor is that Canon will be announcing a ultra wide angle RF-S zoom lens this autumn, which would allow me to complete my transition from EF-M to RF / RF-S mounts. I need such a lens for a trip to Hawaii next year, as we want to take a guided night hike to the lava flows in Volcanoes National Park. This will allow me to hike through the area without swapping lenses -- R6 Mark II full frame with RF 24-105 f/4 L IS + R10 APS-C with RF-S ultra wide zoom. Swapping lenses in such an environment at night is something I wish to avoid. I had a similar setup with the M50 for past hikes in geothermal areas in Yellowstone and Iceland.

Let's make this thread a tribute to the M system.

My M kit is M6II, 11-22, 28 macro and 55-200. Another dream kit

I have the M5 and M6, with these dedicated lenses:

Rokinon 12/2 NCS
Canon EF-M 22/2
Canon EF-M 11-22/4-5.6 IS STM
Canon EF-M 15-45/3.5-6.3 IS STM
Canon EF-M 18-55/3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon EF-M 55-200/4.5-6.3 IS STM

I prefer using the EF-S 55-250/4-5.6 IS STM, over the EF-M 55-200, but it sure is small...

I'm using the M5 and M6 (and SL2) in the studio. They're great for working in close, under, behind, and above stuff.

While RF bodies are getting smaller, there is a limit to how small they can get due to the larger mount. Moreover the focus on small lenses is not there so far unlike EOS-M system which targeted a compact system.

Following is the EOS-M that I used to own with a 22mm f2 against the smallest RF mount body (R100) with a 24mm 1.8 lens:

On the contrary, if you were thinking about wanting to play around with EOS-M now might be that time to start watching to see what happens. It looks like an EOS M50 Mark II with the kit lens was lowered to $599 earlier this year. Maybe in the future it could go to $499 or lower if there is some left over stock that doesn't move.

Also looks like there is a decent supply of lenses still, so that's certainly something to watch for as well. If anyone is holding onto EF-M I'd watch closely to see if there ends up being a fire sale on lenses during the holidays.

When I compare to the M6 II, it is apparent that it is the viewfinder of the R cameras that increases the size, so for cameras with VF the size of the mount doesn't matter that much.

Regarding pancake lenses they are there also in RF mount. Both the 16 mm and 28 mm should work nicely on APS-C although they are not as fast as designated crop lenses could be.
