I believe these are swamp sparrows. They were mostly down in the brush in the woods near the swamp in Kissena Park here in New York City. I was able to get there photos when they popped up once in a while. There was even a rare opportunity to photograph both male and female togethering.

3) I was quite far back yet they seemed aware of my presence

Nice set Morris, you seem to be finding plenty to shoot as your birds migrate in and out.
Are swamp sparrows like country folk vs/ city folk?

Thank you Eric,

Yes we have resident birds as well as migratory ones. Regarding country folk v city folk, it is probably more like ethnicity yet unlike ducks and particularly mallards, we don't see as much cross breeding.
