I'd love to see how the newer 70-180 f2.8 lens does for portrait work. I'm especially curious to see what it does in the 135-150mm range wide open. I'm considering one of those bad boys.

I am not a professional but have been using this lens for portraits of the family - my point being that I am sure it can be better showcased by someone with more experience. Here are some examples:

Those were all at 180mm if I remember correctly. The following are in the 135mm range:

Note that for the second one (girl in green) I did use Adobe AI to fill the area just behind the knees since there was a sidewalk that just looked out of place, so if there is anything funny in that region it's not the lens' fault.

I've only had my Nikon 70-180 for a little while, so not too many portraits taken with it yet. Did some shots of my daughter and her friends for homecoming, using a mix of lenses, and used the 70-180 for a few.

The first one is wider, at 70mm (and very dim light...ISO 8000). Second is at 155mm.

However, I also owned the Tamron 70-180/2.8 when I shot Sony, and it's the same lens optically...some samples of my son from my time with that, on the A7R IV:

I'm liking the bokeh and color rendition of this lens I see in examples thus far. I may consider one. Especially like that it can take my 1.4xtc as well if needed.

Well I guess my resistance was rather weak. Viewed a ton of images from this lens across the web and caved. Ordered next day delivery from B&H so should have the weekend to play with it.

I should have picked this one up over the 70-200 S, as I rarely use this range and it's small size makes it perfect for travel..

No comment on the lens - but I love the old-school Link outfit. I wore that (adult sized) last year for Halloween while my son was new-school (Breath of the Wild, blue shirt) Link!

Just got it late today. I'll be testing outdoors tomorrow. Indoors in less then decent light it is instant to lock accurate focus. Man this sucker is sharp.....like surgically sharp even wide open. Can't wait to do some wildlife and landscapes with it. Nice and light compared to my 100-400S lens.

I sold my E mount version I and adapter a few months back. Waiting for these to fall to the $1K or below mark before picking one up (hopefully), but I was very happy with the E mount. Can't help but expect the native Z mount will be just as good.

I don't post any family pics anymore, but I'd say if you like the range, don't hesitate. It's a much less imposing lens than a 70-200/2.8.

Glad to see some images here from this lens. It’s looking really good. It seems harder than usual to find a lot of images and reviews on this lens, only a couple hundred images on Flickr even though the lens has been out for several months. I did find some good reviews on YouTube, but most of them are not in english, and the auto-captions are pretty bad for tech stuff. I guess I should watch the Tamron reviews, but Nikon did some tweaks so it’s really not identical. Please post more pics
