p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Humpy and the Bear

This bear is giving us a good look at a "humpy" aka pink salmon. The name comes from the curved back that characterize the fish in fresh water rivers. The distorted dorsal area, the green color, and the hooked upper jaw all develop during the spawn. When they are in the ocean they are very streamlined, bullet shaped, silver colored fish. They are referred to as "bright" before they begin the metamorphosis.

Dan,
Excellent Photo, but I am having difficulty determining who is the subject, since I had Salmon for dinner, I'll pick the Salmon.:
Kidding aside, Great Photo

Thanks, Morris. Humpies are best left for the bears and the canneries. Even when they're caught in salt water they're the least desirable of the Pacific salmon species for the table. The bears aren't as picky as people.

Thanks, Karl. Yes this one had a unique way of holding the fish after catching them. Wondering if she was smart enough not to squeeze them so not to squirt out the roe like many of the bears would do.

Great photo and two pretty subjects. Even though one isn’t going to be around long. What a pretty bear. That is not a lot of lens for such a big bear, your a brave guy.

Dan, that's a great shot! I can't help but want to add a graphic speech 'bubble' coming out of the Salmon's mouth -- he sure looks like he's saying something -- like, "Oh 'S#@&!'"

Dan - What a great shot. Love everything about it. Water dripping off bear, walking on the shore, the big claws and the look at me I have a salmon. Well done.

Thanks, Dave. The salmon wasn't long for the world anyway so just as well the bear got a good meal out of it. Coastal brownies are well fed and aren't as aggressive as interior grizzlies. I had plenty of lens. When they get really close you break out the cell phone and shoot video.

Thanks, Greg. Yeah poor fish. They only get to have sex once in their lifetime and this one got caught on its way to meet its date.
