p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · R8 powered by USB-C possible???

i got a 60watt usbc to usbc cable as seen here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CC59T7QX
i got an Anker usbc output power bank, up to 3amps https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B096TP4B1T/
with a Canon battery inserted, i can see the Canon (being Off) battery being charged from the Anker. however when i flipped Canon to the On position, the cam is no longer siphoning power from the Anker.
can anyone confirm this is normal? i was really hoping to power up the Canon with the Anker so i can shoot all day without any anxiety or carrying a bunch of tiny canon batteries....

I think I saw in an R6Mk2 thread that only a few PD power banks could actually power the camera in use, regardless of wattage. I don't recall which brand worked. Try searching Google too since I don't remember where I saw it. If you find the one that runs the R6, it should work for the R8.

The Anker battery you linked is only 18W PD.

Not 100% sure this Camnostics link for the R5 also applies to the R8, but it seems to be the case for my R6II, which is basically the guts of the R8. Looks like you need at least a 30W PD power brick, but might also be model dependent and ~45W might be a more certain threshold.

I have a 100W capable power brick and it will power the R6II while on, but a battery still needs to be in the grip for this to work.

The other option is to get a LP-E17 dummy battery and plug it into most any old USB power brick. This bypasses the camera's potentially more fragile USB port (if it's not going to be stationary/tripod mounted).

If you get a LP-E17 USB battery charger, you could have that pugged into the Anker battery you bought and keep it in a small bag charging your spare batteries while out shooting. This avoids having a cable connected to the camera.

You might get yourself a very dumb charger that works with a very dump 1000 ma/h powerbank or any other very dumb and low speced USB power source and be a lot happier for a lot less money an no cables on your otherwise pretty convenient camera.

Just one extra spare does the job. Example: You've done some sightseeing in a city, and before you're looking for a restaurant you'll be often at the hotel anyway to change shoes and/or take a quick shower and/or have a power nap. At the hotel you can change the battery from the day, put it in the charger, so it charges during the evening while you are shooting with the other -fresh-battery.
The same thing applies to any situation where a battery can be charged in the car. In the morning you're visiting location A. It's on hour driving to location B. That hour you can charge a battery. But you can also charge further in the car while visiting location B when one hour isn't enough to charge. You can also even charge in a restaurant without having the camera exposed.

Buy a charger that can charge 2 batteries and you won't have to wake up during night time to put the other battery in the charger.
You might even find out 2 batteries is a lot to go through for just one day of shooting. It probably won't happen that often you would need a powerbank to charge a camera battery while you're shooting with the other. It can feel save to have it though, and dumb powerbanks are cheap as chips. And so are USB camera battery chargers.

I use a Tether Tools Case Relay power supply with dummy batteries, for cameras with E6- and E17-series batteries. It lets me power the camera from either a USB powerbank or AC, with an internal battery in the device to keep the amera up, while swapping power sources.

Your battery is too small and won't trigger the PD functionality.

I've been powering my R5 for years now ... you need two things... a PD battery and enough wattage in that battery. Note the battery must be a Power Delivery (PD) battery, these have the technology to match voltage and talk to a device. I only have one of the newer Canon batteries for the R5 and no desire to buy another.

For what it's worth, I have a USB-C PD powerbank (5, 9 and 12V) that maxes out at 2.77A at 9V 1.67A at 12V and while it can charge the R8 it cannot power it once switched on. The R8 instruction manual does not specify the characteristics of the power supply required for that feature. The Canon dummy battery option is the safer route, it can be connected to an inverter (I use the Paul Buff Vagabond Mini), heavy and cumbersome for sure but lasts forever. It can also power flash units, etc.. The R8 is a recent acquisition, I am interested to see the improved "mileage" of the batteries compared to the RP, along the lines of the improvements the R6mk2 demonstrates relative to the R6.

My R5 manual states nothing about powering the camera in this way either. When I spoke to Canon CPS, they just stated something like "only Canon products...." or something like that. I was one of the earliest to own the thing and Canon CPS staff were just learning it too... they had no special information.

I had the courage to pursue this because I saw somewhere in my manual "PD"... and since I knew what that was, I was off and running.

Canon R5 will require 30w PD to power the camera while in use, you need to make sure your cable is a PD cable. 18w PD is enough to charge the camera when switched off. I assume newer models to have similar requirements.

I believe Camnostics also complained about lack of documentation in the manual. At least it's possible. A little Easter egg for those looking...

I am not sure what a PD cable is. I just purchased a few USB C - C (male to male) shortie cables from Amazon... they worked as did some long C-C cables I had laying around. I think for a cable to call itself a USB C cable, it must conform to an open standard. I am not aware of differences.

Just to restate, using this big PD battery is how I power my camera for years now. I only don't use it when I know I am just shooting for a few hours and won't need the longevity. When I am out shooting birds on a tripod, that PD pack is on there 100% of the time. I never had an issue.

The only thing I would improve, is the battery attachment system to the camera... it is bulky... but never a problem.

Peace

If you buy any old USB-C cable thinking it will delivery enough power then you're kind of rolling the dice. Some will, some won't. If you shop a reputable cable brand, they should specify its power delivery rating, such as 60W, 100W, if applicable. That is what a "PD" cable is, to properly work with your PD battery/power brick.
