Where Did my Focus Point Display Go?

I am stumped. I was just fiddling around with my R6 and inadvertently made ny focus point disappear from the the screen. No matter what I try, I can't seem to get it back! Anyone know how to make it appear again? (I'm referring to the small, rectangular focusing point you normally see on the screen; the one that can be moved around via the touch screen).

In other words; I use the AF point selectir on ny screen to lock on to subjects fir tracking. If I can't see the focal point, the camera will select whatever it wants to focus on instead of what I want to focus on.

Not sure if any of these but pressing the Set button will generally locate the AF Point to Center.

Also, if an attached lens is set to Manual Focus, there won't be an AF Square.

I know the joystick works as well, in the default configuration. Not sure about the Set button.

Thanks! Unfortunately it didn't work. I even re-set the camera to start from scratch, but that didn't work either. I'm not sure if I need to be looking into the AF settings or display settings.

This is starting to get really frustrating.

I'm assuming you just switched it from AF Single point to Zone AF.

If you open up the menu on the camera, go to the second option labeled "AF". The 2nd option "AF Method". Single point AF is the 3rd option in the list.

Apparently this is the official website for Canon's HTML version of the manual. The page for AF control is here:

https://cam.start.canon/en/C004/manual/html/UG-04_AF-Drive_0050.html#AF-Drive_0050_1

What Auto Focus Mode/Method ( Spot, Center Point, Expansion, Zone, Face+tracking) do you have set, and what, if anything do you see on both the EVF, and/or Display, that is in any attributable to AF, ( A square, small or large, A rectangle, A circle, or nothing at all)?

Are you sure you're not in face+ eye detect mode? This gives a viewfinder with no box. It searches the whole frame for a face.

If you're back at factory default settings, you can hit the right most button on the back, looks like a series of boxes. That should cycle the focus mode. Or go to the menu and turn off face plus eye. Or, set the starting method for face plus eye to be from spot mode.

Or if you think it's a display issue, hit the info button to cycle through the available viewfinder overlays and see if that brings you box back.

I have an R5, not R6, but on the R5 in Face+Tracking mode there is still a rectangle visible, as that mode does not quite cover the entire screen.

It's not clear as to what he sees on the EVF, or the Screen, if anything at all, and without that knowledge it's just random guessing as to the source of the problem.

Here's what I'm seeing in my screen:

I have no option to select what I want to track.

Honestly, I think something is wrong with the camera at this point.

Try switching to one of the other AF areas that you have made available.

On the R6 II there is not even that tracking AF area that you show you have selected.

That is what I see as well. But you and I have selected the sub option to start from previous point, or whatever it's actually called in the menu. I don't have it in front of me.

As per those images, you have Face+Tracking enabled, and you should see a white lined rectangle slightly inward from the edge of the screen.

The other image shows nothing, and even with the lens in MF, or no lens attached you should see a white circle on the screen.

If not, I'd call Canon and see if they can offer a solution..

I changed my R5 to the 1st option, and still get the rectangle, but also tried AUTO, and got a white circle & no rectangle.

My subject to detect is Animal, and I'm not sure if a different setting there could make a difference, but I'll give it a try.

Gave it a try: Even when choosing AUTO, and Subject to Detect at NONE, there's a white circle.

If he doesn't get the white circle with the lens in MF, or detached it would seem to be a defect with the camera,--- that is assuming the R6 behaves in the same manner as the R5.

I think this must be a difference between the R5 and R6, and maybe R6 and R6II. Or maybe there is something in these more recent firmware updates I haven't found yet. I agree on the white outline around the very edge of the frame though. That should be there. The circle is what's tripping me up.

On my R6 MK II I have the * button customized to toggle between tracking and no tracking. In one-shot mode, when tracking is disabled, I get the white box in the center all AF patterns (single, expansed, small area) except for whole screen. Whole screen is blank. The AF box is fixed and doesn't move during AF (albeit I can move it with my finger on the rear screen). When I press the * button to activate tracking, the box moves around, sitting on objects it thinks might be a possible subject.

snegron7, I wonder if your AF pattern is set to whole screen? Because the whole screen is an active AF area, the a white box isn't needed. All the other AF patterns—single point to small area—have a white box. If you're not in whole screen AF, but no white box, maybe there's a glitch in your camera? The latest FW has been stable and glitch free for me, but some of the earlier FW causes assorted freezes and features to disappear. I'd reset the camera and update the FW before heading off to Canon Service.

The R5 doesn't have the Whole Screen option, & according to the R6 Manual, the R6 doesn't either, unless it was added with a firmware update. My R5 is still on 1.5.2?

Don't know about the R6, but with the R6 II, it is like Gochugogi said, there is no little white box, because there is no need for one when in that mode.

Just confirmed the above: With the R6 there is no little white box when using certain AF Methods as shown on pages 369-373 of the PDF Advanced User Guide for the R6:

https://cam.start.canon/en/C004/manual/c004.pdf

As the Imagemaster previously suggested, select another AF Method/Mode other than Face+tracking. Try Center Point for example and see if you get a small white box.

If you do, that will at least confirm that your problem is associated somehow only with the Face/Tracking Mode settings, and not a total camera defect.
