p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Compact flash for my G5X

Picked up this g5x a very good price but when I attach my full size external flash it becomes quite cumbersome so I'm looking for something that will give me more flash power than the built in flash but without a size that overpowers the camera.

Any suggestions?

I used to have a 270EX flash that ran on a pair of AA batteries. I didn't have a built in flash on my body to compare, but it is probably more powerful. I could bounce it off the ceiling or use it for fill flash.

EL-100? Alternatively, there's the very old 220EX flash, but you cannot bounce it, it only flashes forward. I use it as a pseudointernal flash for my Canon fullframes in case I didn't expect, but needed to send some light forward.

I kinda like 4xAA flashes, not very fond of li-ions, or smaller count-or-size of batteries flashes. I did use the tiiiny 90EX only as an indoor flash commander, but the two puny AAA couldn't give it the juice long enough. 2xAAs will be only a bit better i presume...

I actually called keh to get the 220ex IIRC, glad I got a knowledgeable person to talk me into the 380EX + cord. I haven'ttried 2XAA flashes doesn't sound too good I agree

I saw 380EX myself so I could compare, it was better in power and options, but too big for a "just in case" flash for a FF camera. I think today's 430EX/3 is about its size. 220EX is way smaller yet.

Hi John,

I use a Nikon SB-30 flash for travel with small cameras (of any brand). Also, I sometimes use it in the studio to synch devices on optical sensors. It uses the venerable 123 battery (CR 123A, DL 123A), which is still readily available. It has three manually-selected power levels (full, 1/8, and 1/32), which is plenty for somebody that knows how to use "M", on a camera control dial.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks for the comments and I have the 600EX-RT so you can imagine how that looks on the little G5X

I had a Nissan i40A for Fuji that came in a Canon version. It was a great little flash that bounced.

I second the recommendation for the Nikon SB-30. My "compact" travel camera is a Plaubel Makina 670, and in the rare circumstances where I want a flash on that setup, I use the Nikon SB-30: It is tiny (about the size of two rolls of 120 film) so fits nicely in my Plaubel travel case, and it easily covers the 80mm lens on the Plaubel (with the little diffuser there as an option if I want to soften the light a little). The CR123 battery lasts a good long time as well. As a bonus, the flash offers TTL if I want to use it on my FE2 or F3/T. They are getting a bit hard to find, having been discontinued for a while now, and the secret is out about how useful it is. Took some hunting for me to find one, but really very happy with it!

Glad you mentioned this. My Dad (97), just gave me his Nikon FE with Nikkor E 50/1.8 and Vivitar MC 80-200. It's all cleaned up and loaded with 400TX or HP5+ (too many cameras). I'll know which it is, if it gets much past 24 exposures. At least, they're both 400. Anyway, I'll try it with the SB-30. Should open up some interesting high-contrast options, that I didn't consider (already dusted off my RGY filters). Cheers.

Speaking of the Plaubel Makina 670. I always wanted one, but found it too difficult to shell out so much cash (says past-owner of new 1D-series cams). I went with the Fuji GW670II and GSW690II. I miss 'em.

The Nikon FE doesn't have TTL, alas, but the SB-30 will work just fine in automatic mode.

I paid around $900 for my 670 a few years after they were discontinued, and thought the price high at the time (actually, my Wife kindly bought it for me as a birthday present, as otherwise I wouldn't have spent that much!). I have subsequently invested another $500 in repairs/CLA (it slipped out of my camera bag while exiting a car, and took a tumble to the pavement which broke the advance mechanism), but I have gotten 40 years of service out of it, so no complaints.

Oh, yeah, it's probably smaller, but the 380EX + cord is so much more versatile and not huge. I just use pop up flash too in a pinch. I'm currently using 540EZ, a bit bigger, kind of enjoying manual, believe it or not, it has both swivel and bounce, so cord less needed

The 270EX is way smaller than 300 series units. Pro: GN is 27m, about twice that of the pop-ups on Rebels and X0D cameras. Bad: it does not tilt or swivel, or act as Master for other units.

Mine popped straight up.

The 270 EX II does tilt, but not rotate. I like mine as a very small backup item to keep in the bag.

My apologies. I had forgotten the head does tilt up for ceiling-bounce. Thanks for catching my senior moment.

+1 on the 270EX II. I use this as a daylight fill for my RP and works great-- has just enough power for close twos and groups within ten feet. It is a great size to fit in a jacket pocket when travelling.

Perhaps not a scenario with your G5X, but the best part of this is that unlike a regular sized Speedlite, it doesn't twist and snag on your side when you have it slung over your shoulder, catching your hip or arm etc while you use your other camera body.
