What are your preferences for noise reduction software (not Lightroom plugins) with specific relevance for wedding photography (color noise in dark skies/dark tuxedos), and/or from images that have been processed with HDR actions.

I've seen recommendations for Topaz AI and others, but oftentimes the examples shown are for astrophotography and animals and we humans, mostly, are a different animal

Thanks so much!

I overexpose slightly and pull back in post (Capture One) to help eliminate noise. I was using Canon, but now I'm on Fujifilm the noise is more pleasing to me than any of the other manufacturers (I've edited a lot of other photographers RAW files).

Clients don't scrutinise photos the same way that some photographers do for noise in their photos. They are looking back at the memory and emotions that our photos give them.

Do you have an example of what noise you're trying to eliminate?

Lr has a decent option that will cover majority of issues.

Not sure there is a really need unless it is a specialty like creating supper hi res images blown up extremely large.

What I do from time to time is download and install the top 3 NR applications (trial version) and install them on my computer. I then take an 8x10 head shot of a model and make four 4x5 images with the three NR applications and one using Photoshop NR. I create a composite image with all four images in each quadrant.

This makes it easy to see variations in color fidelity, sharpness, and any loss of detail from these applications. Photoshop is used as a reference image as it is too time consuming to use on hundreds of image files. The other 3 applications are used in Auto mode as that is how I would prefer to process many images from an event.

Total time to do this is one hour. Total cost is zero. Far more useful than posting on a forum and reading the various reports by individual users of an individual NR application on who knows what subject.

With digital cameras there is no excuse not to do it yourself.

I regularly shoot m4/3 at 12,800 so noise reduction is important to me. I have Dxo. Topaz Photo Ai, Lightrooms Denoise, and a few others that are not competitive. I use all three because I have found that one program may fail on an image while another one is able to handle it. Artifacts! I had one shoot in which I had to use two of the programs.

My go to's are first and foremost, DXO PHotolab 7 for higher ISO noise issues. 2nd would be ON1 as with just one click it brings out superb noise reduction while adding what I consider to be about the best in sharpening. If I have a tricky or difficult shot I opt for running it though the new version of Topaz PhotoAI. Between those 3 they are simply the finest results with the least amount of work. I skip all Adobe stuff

DxO PureRaw3 does the best for me. Amazing noise reduction and optimum lens correction and sharpening all in one. Plus you can keep it as a DNG when done.
