Speaking of PZ/OL reviews... I don't think it's fair to criticize them for having many old reviews, because these are mostly for lenses that have been phased out anyway (yes, the Canon 24-85 USM was never reviewed on high MP FF body... But would anyone - except me, of course - ever want to read about such a bloodbath?)

Yeah, me Although I know how it would end up in the FF regions outside the APS-C, as I put it on 6D... If I for a while disregard the effort and also availability of such various lenses, they're still around and people may still try to use them, because they're available for cheap bucks, so a test at least on a 20MP FF would be nice. But I agree minority of people would read it.

E.g. apart from 24-85USM which was relatively good performing on APS-C and was a nice match with SL1 and SL2 Rebels (until I bought EF-S 18-135 USM), I also have the ancient 28-80 with weird combination of ring usm and rotating front element. It flares quite badly, but it's small, light, and I believe better in corners than 24-85, and I take it sometimes when I am absolutely positive I would not need any normal zoom...

Haha, looks like I'm not alone then (and I do use the 24-85 on a top of the line FF camera, though I've never made any technical evaluations). But with the avalanche of new products especially in the ML systems of late, PZ/OL can be forgiven for not having much time to backtrack (and even then, Klaus did a fun series of tests on vintage medium Tele lenses earlier this year, so he's not entirely mired in the current affairs...) Sure, as a part-time Nikon user now, I'd like them to provide some more Z mount reviews, but I hope they get back in the game eventually.

On the contrary, availability of lenses is often better here in Australia than in the US. Two of the three lenses you mention were in stock at a major retailer when I checked today.

What we don’t have is good photo equipment rental. There are some studios for hire that also rent out small numbers of bread-and-butter items, often discontinued models. The only specialist photo equipment rental business that I know of wants to hold your passport while you have the gear. I would not agree to it, I imagine Klaus might not (even if they accept a German passport if he’s still on that), and of course, it’s useless if you want to hire something for an overseas trip!

Because we speak English, are notorious early adopters, and are in about the same time zone as Japan, Japanese electronics companies often launch or test products here. This might explain, for example, how Jan Wegener manages to hear about some new stuff before infuencers in the US or UK.

Well, then it means Klaus had different reasons. Of course, he can't be expected to buy/resell, or even rent, everything, because he's doing this out of his own pocket. I was nagging him for years to review the Tamron 45/1.8, but in the end just bought one (almost) blindly, after reading only Dustin Abbott's review of it.

This is the domain of Phillip Reeve's site, because they don't pick lenses to review based on monetization. But they generally don't review EF glass. Otherwise, why will anyone review a 25 year old, average performing EF standard zoom? Or any $50-100 'vintage' lens that will not drive affiliate commissions or get views on YT. These old forums might be the last platforms with user feedback about these lenses on modern cameras (and maybe somewhere on FB, etc., but I'm not there, so don't know).

I suppose if you want to know how these old lenses perform on new cameras, spend the $50-100, commit some of your time to do a review and post the results here for the handful of others also looking for this info. And help Fred keep the lights on.

Yeah, if only the local reviews section hadn't gone belly up at some point in the past...
Recently, I've also found another site with many reviews, but they're mostly evaluating Nikon gear - that I had zero issue with, as a Nikon Z user now, but I guess that puts the site, linked below, somewhat beyond the scope of the OP's question. They do have a few Canon reviews, though.

It appears reviews here at FM now are on the brand-specific boards. As I mentioned earlier, Fred has been posting a fair number of reviews for Leica M-mount and Sony lenses and those are all on their respective boards. An advantage of this option is it allows member contributions with additional images, commentary, updates, etc. Many of these threads become on-going image and discussion threads, which can be very helpful when evaluating general lens characteristics.

I wouldn't mind commiting a time, but all I could do would be shots of brick walls. Definitely nothing close to Optical Limits tests with graphs and lines per mm.

Plenty of measubation reviews out there. We don't need any more. It's nice to have a more expository artist or photographer's review with real images and hands-on experience in the field.

Even brick wall photos tell a story about a lens that graphs and lp/mm don't. Like any story, some will be interested and others not so much. But I agree with Gochugogi that a general hands-on evaluation would be informative. And if posting such a review in a new thread, it invites others with similar interests in a given lens to contribute their own observations and experiences.

TDP is good, but way too much filler. Optical test charts are often surprisingly unhelpful. Cameralabs are infuriatingly incomplete, they start a review and then often never finish it. Much of Optical Limits tests are way out of date on now ancient sensors. I like Lenstip.com. They're snippy at times but talk a lot of sense. Personally I tend to prefer real user's sites such as Petr Bambousek, but of course you have to trust the user. A bunch of amateurs testing seems to bring out the measurebators at the expense of real world use

I'm just not a big TDP fan. Although I look at all of the sites occasionally, Ken Rockwell has good info, too.

I don't find the various complaints about older sensors on opticallimits particularly valid, even 8mp aps is 20mp ff pixel density. And that is current, given all the 20-24mp ff out there. In addition on the newer tests (how many on here besides me are even interested in the lenses tested on 8mp aps, years ago?) he does often use more than one camera, including a higher mp one, and it's mostly numerical and laid out pretty plainly

Not really as interested in user reviews, people tend to be full of it. I'd rather see numbers on contrast, resolution.

That's one of the better ones. I go straight to crops and all the test data.

Sometimes they sadly make a bad lens better than it is. Well maybe the lens performs much better at closer distances. So basically ended up with 16-35 III that performs far below expectations on 8K sensors.

On the positive side, I swapped Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for Tamron one and that's been a massive win.

Ideally you would want a collection of RAW files showing closeup and infinity performance, and all other tests. Every garbage lens has received very good to excellent ratings on too many sites so these words sadly don't mean anything any more. How do you describe Sigma 135mm ART? Out of this worlds, or still same meaningless excellent?

I would turn that around and say that "objective" sites are equally often full of it. There are so many issues testing lenses particularly zooms and super teles (intermediate focals lengths, distance to test charts etc etc). I'm not saying these are all worthless, but a mix of reviews is required, and there is also the personality of the tester and the interpretation of the results that may well vary. If I see someone has impressive photos then I am more likely to think their opinion worthwhile than someone who just posts numerous exceedingly dull shots with lots of unnecessary bokeh, for example. Also comparison statements about this lens being better than that lens age very quickly unless they are updated, so that is another source of variability. Having said all this we all need reviews and if you read around you will probably be able to work out what will work for you and what you may not like.

He does, and he sometimes comments on things other reviewers don’t, but at the same time he seems to be a focussed art type and if he isn’t personally interested in some aspect of a lens he might downplay or not mention that it is weak there. I got burned from believing his review of the EF 85mm f/1.8 – he apparently didn’t care about the purple fringing. Don’t use him as your only source.

Like TDP, he has affiliate links (links you click through to retailers where he gets a commission).

Knowing how to read an MTF chart is useful there. Be aware that some are calculated, and some are measured.

True, but those 8MPs were on cropper, so you basically get the image center of the lens when they're mounted to FF.

So for me the older tests don't lack the resolution, but the area of the image circle. It started to bother me a bit when I bought my first FF.

TDP has often been the last nail in my wallet, the jump from 400/5.6L to 100-400LIS2 perhaps the one where I relied almost totally on reviews, being a prime guy up to that moment.

But I have never found his "scientific" tests that reliable. His images tells most of it. But I have found his reviews of the cheap line RF lenses too negative. The 100-400 f/8, 600 and 800 f/11 has projected far better images on my R5, R7, R10 sensors than what could be believed from his reviews. The 16, 24-105 STM and 24-240 does very well too, leaving my Zeisses at home most of the time.

With 30 years experience of this internet thing as well as two decades without it, I would still say that Gollum did his part at the end. There is None to Rule Them All. And nothing beats your own experience.

True but how many of these old lenses stay current now? Most were phased out or went through new versions to replace them. It's still fun to read some old PZ reviews, of course, but I'm probably an anomaly in that sometimes I really do get an itch to grab some old gear. In fact, out of the eight EF-mount lenses I own, four are actually from that era (late 90s / early 00s), and I use them all on a 45mm FF camera now...

That's the thing , no reviews are perfect, but if you don't use them, then what? Are you going to go out and buy every piece of gear and try it yourself? I'm not.

Someone taking excellent photos might make me more interested in the lens, I'll admit. But one can take excellent photos with almost all lenses, especially if you are looking at the Internet, I kind of roll my eyes if I see people saying they looked at samples. Yes personal preference plays a role, that is the reason I prefer a numerical, graph presentation like opticallimits.
