Hi,

I currently have the 24-120 f4 and plan to add the 14-24 f2.8 and
eventually the 100-400 to complete the set.

The question I have is what to do about filters...

I would like to get magnetic filters.

But the 24-120 and 100-400 are 77mm while the 14-24 is 112mm.

Getting two sets of filters seems expensive and wasteful.
What do folks do ? Carry two sets of filters or is there a way
to get 112mm and step down to 77mm?

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks
Abhijit

I have two sets of filters because of the 14-24mm......if you want to save yourself a lot of money and get very close to the same end-product, get the 14-30 instead of the 14-24 if you don't need f2.8. Now I think the 14-24 is absolutely stunning but there's a big price for the second set of filters and the difference in lens prices.

I bought the 82mm Kase filters. I use a 77mm adapter where needed but at least that way I can use the filters for a variety of other lenses too.

Get the largest 112mm kase set and a kase 77mm step up magnetic ring and you are done. If at some point you need an 82mm or 95mm just purchase the appropriate step up ring. Initial cost will be greater due to the cost of the 112 filters compared to the 82, but then you have locked out the possibilities of any future larger diameter lenses. Mike

Get different filter sets. Step-up rings obviously don't work well with lens hoods anyway. I have 2 polarizing filters for 77mm and 82mm, respectively, as I keep them on the lenses and avoid moving the filters from one lens to the other.

How badly do you want F2.8 on the wide end? If you went with the 14-30, it takes 82mm screw-on filters, and with a simple step-down ring you could use the same filters on all the mentioned lenses without dealing with massive filters. Filters become a huge PITA once you have to deal with the bulbous front elements, at least in my opinion.

The 14-24/2.8 is a bit better optically but the 14-30 is so good that you may not care. It's also much lighter and more compact if you ever travel/hike with it.

I would never bother with stepping up from 77 to 112. I have a 112mm polarizer for my 14-24, and I have a set of 77mm filters for my other lenses (and a set of 67mm filters, and an 82mm filter).

I hate dealing with step-up rings because they're a royal pain in the rear end in the field (if I want to shoot a shot at 18mm and then at 40mm, I would have to take off the big filter, get the step up ring set, screw them together, then put it on the other lens, then take the shot, then remove it, disassemble the step up rings, etc). What a pain.

I even have 3 77mm polarizers because when I shot Canon my 3 lens zoom kit all took 77mm filters and I hated swapping in the field, so I'd just put them all on before going out and then they were set...and then I'd worry about removing them if I needed a shot without it.

I could understand, especially with magnetic filters, going with like an 82mm if you had mixed 77/82 threads, but the 112 is HUGE, and it just wouldn't be fun to use with the 24-120mm. I keep it inside the 14-24 filter hood, with cap on, and I cut down a 110mm rear rubber cap for a Schneider lens to fit over the back of the filter hood, so it is ready to go and quick and easy to install and also safe to store.

I have the three lenses you are talking about and found myself in the same situation you are facing.
I ended up getting a set of 77 mm filters for the 24-120 and 100-400 (mostly to share the polarizer) and a separate set for the 14-24.
For the 14-24, I speak knowledgeably, having had the old 14-24 with the 150 square filters.
After initial enthusiasm they always stayed at home, especially where they would be needed, after trekking in somewhat inaccessible areas.
Consequently, since
- I love photographing at night.
- I am not a fan of square filters (they are fragile, bulky and difficult to handle, especially with gloves on).
- I have never used graduated square filters, even having them.
- the Z7 (both I and II) allows me to drop iso to 64 and even 32, which is often enough to make moving water silky (in case I close at f22 and then mix the shot in post, diffraction on water doesn't exist anyway)
I have opted for a set of back filters, which are cheap and space-saving.
This allowed me to invest more in filters for the other two lenses.
This at least for now, in the future I will probably get a 112mm polarizer, which I actually miss in some cases.

Ah, one last thing about magnetic filters.
I tried them for my last Icelandic tour.
I got a set of 77 and a set of 82, I wasn't sure which ones fit best.
The 77 set vignetted with 24 lens on the 24-120, so in case take of the 82, as Kase recommends.
In any case, after 2 filters even there they start vignetting.
The polarizer is not smooth in rotation-there is always some friction because it creeps.
You then have to use the special cap and not the standard one, and this in the backpack often comes off.
In the end I returned everything and went with regular screw-on filters.

Agree with this. This is exactly what I do, and I have these exact same lenses. Kase magnetic filters are easy to use and appear to provide great results.
The 14 to 24 f/2.8 is a stonking lens.. it really is ridiculously good even wide open where it can often come into its own when using depth of field on ultra wide angle with close focus which is something I enjoy, and that lens has a to die for bokeh… and using the Kase magnetic filters I get no vignetting at all even when stacked (ND and polariser for example)

Just bear in mind magnetic filters are not as robustly attached as screw on, but that is the point, it makes them a lot more flexible to use, and you slap on when you need. If I was looking at an always on UV filter … I would look at a screw on… but again I have moved away from this now genereally and prefer to use a lens hood as the front element protector.

14-24 f/2.8 is an incredible lens
I had it for a while and took it on many trips east, with z6ii and z7ii, along with z 70-200 S.
I still have the filter for the 14-24 even though I sold the lens. This thread reminds me to list it on Buy and Sell. 🤦🏻‍♂️

For the 14-24 i got the metal hood and the 112mm CPL. I leave it in the hood and swap hoods when I need it. I have a lot of 77mm filters for the 100-400 abd24-120. To deal with ND filters for the 14-24I got a Kase 4 filter set that clips in. They’re quite good. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BRQM6FFW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
