Don't know the details but walked past the shop just now and it was shuttered, with a sign on the door posting the shocking news. The location was ransacked during the George Floyd riots that devastated the neighborhood in 2020 when organized vandal gangs tore down the gates and ransacked the location.

May he rest in peace.

This is sad news. I had purchased lenses from him and he was always very pleasant to talk with over the phone.

I saw their post on Insta. Very unexpected passing, it seems. RIP, Elliot.

Also, until I saw that post - I wasn't aware that they Leica stores were privately owned - I just assume they were owned by the Leica company.

He was a personable and knowledgeable fellow, and his staff there is exemplary and professional. Sad loss for the photographic community in SoHo, one of the most creative communities in the US and the world. The shop had just gotten back on its legs after CoVID, civil unrest and economic downturn in NY City, with people finally moving back.

Remember him also in a very positive and open way when I first met him in 2014. At the time I used my Sony A7R with adapted Leica M lenses. Visited his store having the Sony with 50/2 Summicron dangling from my neck. He showed no arrogance at all but expressed instead curiosity. He was interested to know more about mirrorless cameras from me and that they open up to use all kind of third party lenses with them. He agreed that this could open up a new business area for Leica. I visited his store a few more times in years after this but didn't interact personally with him again by coincidence.
