I just asked the same question on the DPReview forum
Hi, if there is someone who understands optics or electronics, please....
On Friday, I was at an event shooting video with the R5, there were lasers that I tried to avoid. The camera had only the screen active because I don't use the viewfinder when shooting video. Nevertheless, the next day, I found the viewfinder damaged as seen in the photo. What I don't understand is how the viewfinder is affected and not the camera sensor. There are no marks on the screen, the photos come out perfect. I can't explain why the viewfinder is affected and not the sensor. I've been talking to Canon, and the warranty doesn't cover me. What I want to understand is how this happened, so I know why I should spend money on the repair.
On the other hand, I believe I can live with the spots on the EVF; the repair cost is up to 800 euros...

Edit, I don't know why I can't post the image..., the link: to the image: http://estudiototal.es/laser/evf.jpg

Sounds like an analog problem, in a digital system. Maybe there's an automatic dead-pixel healing function running in the camera. If you can't get any hints out of your call to Canon, then it's out of my hands.

Have you checked 'vanilla' RAW files from still images?

Anyway, with respect to a problem that shows in the finder but not on the images, I'd live with it. An explanation will probably show up soon, but as long as it dosn't show up in the RAW files, it really doesn't matter.

It reminds me of when my camera repair guy unloaded some twigs from the finder of my Pentax LX (I swaped finders while in the woods). He laughed about it. As long as I figure the images are OK (this problem was obviously in the finder), I didn't care.

Lasers are death to cameras. Did it damage the sensor?

Maybe a laser beam entered through the viewfinder while you were carrying/holding the camera away from your face in between shots?

That's it... it's the only logical explanation...

As I mentioned, the sensor has no issues.

That's also the only thing I can think of. If it's only the EVF then for it to have been caused by the lasers, it would have had to come through the viewfinder optics. Perhaps the optics focused the laser sufficiently to cause damage to the EVF's surface? It's probably some sort of plastic layer that might be relatively soft and susceptible to focused heat from the beam. But I wonder how long the laser beam would have required to do this? You'd think given that there were people at such an event that there would be concern about eye damage if some of the lasers are this powerful.
