p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sad "Elk"

I heard there was a herd of Elk grazing in the foothills of the Cascades and went out Thursday evening, hoping to get a few good shots. I found the herd, got out, and approached them from a distance very slowly. I saw an Elk with what thought was moss in his antlers, but to my dismay it was heavy netting all tangle up and looked uncomfortable. I contacted the Fish and Wildlife local regional Department office providing them details. They said they would investigate and monitor him, but they said if he can eat and drink, they said they won’t interfere, unless it gets severe and he’ll shed his antlers in time.

Good catch for you, bad for the elk. Looks like volleyball netting? I have seen a deer with a hanging basket caught in his antlers. Don't know what the end result was.

Chris, I agree that's sad for that young bull. Hopefully he can get through the fall without snagging it on anything. His buddy sure is checking it out.

Hunting season is coming, perhaps it is camo netting.
Often seen in the oceans adversely affecting sea mammals,
turtles, and large fishes, not so often affecting land mammals.

Love that pose in first one. I also have seen them with all kinds of stuff in their antlers. Good job Chris.

Tony,
Thank You for your comment, I don't consider it a good catch, but to create awareness of animals and what they have to deal with. I think your observation of the netting looks like right on.

Very well-done Chris, actually if it doesn't affect his ability to eat, he'll lose his antlers next year.

Always sad to see such things but likely he'll be just fine albeit a little frustrated. He's already done a number on the netting and surely has been "snagged" in trees by now from the looks of it. In another couple months he'll lose his head gear netting and all and have nice fresh start for next year. Much to his relief I'm sure.

That hat must have cost the young elk a fortune. I hope it dose it no harm. Two excellent images. I'm wondering what the second elk was doing so close to another male. Was it trying to pull the net off?

I posted long horns and you delivered real horns, the irony is not lost here. Great environmental shot of our effect on critters Chris.

Without knowing how he got the net, its hard to criticize, but if that had been plastic rings from a 6 pack you could justifiably be miffed at litterers or unsecured trash, etc. I've seen netting like that used around construction sites. Hard to say with any certainty. Glad you notified f&w, at least they know people are paying attention.

Greg, Thank You for your comment, I hope he gets through it. Fish and wildlife have been informed and said he will eventually shed his antlers.

What's really sad, is that first image would be absolute gold without the netting. I keep telling the Elks not to play the 'Goalie' position -- they just won't listen.
I bet that poor boy did some serious thrashing before he got free!

Morris,
Thank You.

Yes you had to feel sorry for him, He'll have some discomfort, but eventually will eventually shed the antlers. The other bull was looking at it and tried help
