p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Using canon Ra for daytime photography

The Ra has been made more sensitive to parts of the spectrum emitted by astro photography subjects. Does this affect daylight subjects? How? If so, can it be corrected by changing camera's white balance, post processing, or special canon software?

Yes

How?
It adds a little extra red to the scene. The blue sky tends to lean a little more to cyan. Hay fields tend to be a little more reddish-brown.

You can reset the white balance but you won't be eliminating the extra red being captured. That is builtin to the sensor itself.

That said the images captured are still pleasing and you can in post try and eliminate some of the excess red to your liking. Myself I have had the Ra since it came out as well as the Nikon D810A and I recognize the limitations of the excess red but in most cases the images turn out okay for myself. In many cases I like the cyan of the sky and the slight browning of brownish hayfields or dead grass. On the other hand I wouldn't do people photography with the Ra but I like what I can do with scenics and gardens.

You can also buy something called an Original White Balance Filter to correct this. Honestly I have taken a lot of shots with astro modded cams in the daytime and found just setting a custom white balance is enough the vast majority of the time.

OWB filter solves it for sure though.

You won't notice much difference with the Ra in daylight shots. The Ra automatically shifts the WB to compensate for the IR sensitivity. The Ra advantage is a slight boost to DR with less color noise in the shadows than the regular R.

There are also drop-in sensor IR/UV cut filters you can buy, but then you'll need to set the WB manually since the Ra's automatic WB shift will result in the wrong WB.
