p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · GPS sentences understood by Canon 1D cameras | |
This thread is intended as a permanent record of some information I got from Canon's engineers in Japan some years ago. The older 1D series of cameras can connect via a WFT adapter to an external GPS receiver. With something like the Canon GP-E2, the GPS information is carried by a proprietary protocol to the camera. With the 1D cameras, like the 1Ds Mark III, the GPS receiver must send information through NMEA-defined "sentences" to the camera via the WFT's USB port. This is the common protocol language for GPS information exchange between hardware devices from different manufacturers.
These are the NMEA sentences understood by the 1D series cameras. What they are referring to are the headers which identify the identity and format of each GPS message understood by the WFT and the camera. Garmin receivers seem to emit these by default via their USB ports. Some other receivers must be configured to send these sentences in particular. I'm distributing this information here because it isn't in the manuals for either the WFT or the 1D series of cameras, and it isn't to be found anywhere else on the Internet either. Let this serve as documentation.
The following was sent to me by the engineers.
The WFT-E2 II A and EOS 1Ds Mark III can accept the NMEA sentences which start from the below wordings;
$GPGLL
$GPGGA
$GPRMC
$GPGSV
$GPGSA
$GPVTG
$HCHDG
