p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Farmers at the stock auction 3

As 'Douter' said in my last post in this series "very few young farmers" - unfortunately this is very true of the current farming world.
I am not a farmer, just a bystander of that world, but for many years I have lived in farming areas among farming folk. It is striking how that world has changed.
The huge extent and accelerating speed of the 'industrialization' of farming of the last 30 years has left many families marooned.
Few sons want to follow generations of their families and centuries of tradition have been erased.

It is of course 'Progress' and perhaps we have cheaper food ... but (as an admitted 'old man') - I wonder about occupations where intimate involvement with traditional standards and outcomes is replaced by solely basic commercial motives.

And this last image speaks to me more of a quiet despair rather than vibrant optimism.

Sorry to be perhaps boring and I do have to admit that farmers rarely tell you that 'times are good' !

Your series of posts and photos mean quite a bit to me as I grew up in a different, but yet similar environment. Your threads reminded me of my wife's family and I posted a thread a few minutes ago about their lives. See 'Not a Dude Ranch'. Thanks for sharing these because they stir emotions in this old man's heart.

John, I grew up in rural Iowa then a very rural Maryland. Most students in the local high schools were 4H or FFA.

It was a "right of passage" to get classmates together during hay season and help load the hay for our agra classmates. Then came August...the County Fairs then 1st of September the State fair.
Suzanne and I have a life long friend that still farms in his mid 70's. All his brothers have farms...dairy, corn, soy beans...and their children have NOT taken up that livley hood. All my neighbors are life long farmers. Cattle mostly...
It is in the "blood".

I will say this that a few of our farm friends say that the most cash producing "crop" is allowing cell phone companies to use your grain silos as antenna farms! Mucho denaro and free lifetime cell service.

But back to your photo! Super and glad to see some young faces in the stands!

Not boring at all. Each image is a study of human interactions. Beautiful image
