Thanks! Very cool info....I wonder if that lens plays well with the FTZ. Will need to have a look...

I’m not sure… I was looking at a Sigma 150/2.8 for a while, and I read that some of the older ones don’t work on an FTZ. That lens came out before the 50/1.4 EX and was produced through its run. So it’s not impossible that there might be issues, but I’m just speculating.

It’s a nice example of a high performance Sigma lens before their lenses got so huge. The worst I could say about it is that its AF was a bit inaccurate on my 5D, but that was true of all lenses on the 5D, and mirrorless has essentially solved that issue.

Just bite the bullet and get the 50/1.2. Or, for an alternative luscious look, the 58/1.4 on an FTZ—and yes, the combo works perfectly.

I hear you...A little tricky -- that calculus -- because I could grab an FTZ / ART 50 for $5-600. And then use the FTZ for some other G glass. And the 50 1.2 is like $1500.

But one thing is I'm not nuts about a lens that fast. That seems nuts...the photos look a little too surreal for my taste.

The F-mount Nikkor f/1.4 primes in 28mm/58mm/105mm are all lenses that:

A) Are unlikely to have close to direct replacements anytime soon. (The 50mm f/1.2 renders very differently than the 58mm f/1.4.)
B) Work better on the Z cameras due to better autofocus accuracy than the DSLRs. (Notice I said accuracy as in truly focusing precisely at the distance of the object under the active focus point.)
C) Can be had for great deals as a lot of folks are selling off their F-mount lenses.
D) The 28mm and 105mm are still pretty much the best lenses of those focal lengths short of Zeiss Otus. (I know you're mostly into a normal lens in this discussion, but it's worth mentioning since you're still looking at F-mount lenses.)
E) The 58mm works SO much better on the mirrorless cameras than it did on DSLRs, I think the prices may actually rise in the future - a lot of people had issues with inaccurate focus with this one on DSLRs.
F) They're all now working with the IBIS system, which lets you stop down a touch for better sharpness.
G) The 58mm is also pretty light, especially compared to the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 and the Sigma ART.
