I noticed that Canon has released Firmware 1.9 for the Canon R5. Fairly minor update.

Fairly minor is right, except for jumping to 1.9. Maybe "minor fixes" are something more?

Version number just makes people feel better about getting more. Anyone here old enough to remember dBASE II?

I'm quite old and I remember FoxPro 2.0.
dBase II is way too old, even for me

I guess I’m old enough because I did work with Dbase II in the mid 80s.

Right. Did you ever work with dBASE I?

I worked with both dBaseII and dBaseIII, and also FoxPro 2.0. Transcribed a lot of medical records into them. While they were not optimal, at the time, they were really game-changing :-)

From Canon:

Firmware Version 1.9.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Adds the ability to erase voice memos added to images and to add voice memos to protected images.
2. Adds enhanced security when transferring images via FTPS transfer.
3. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
4. Fixes an issue, in which, after touchscreen operation, in rare circumstances, the camera operations cannot be performed, and even if the camera is operated, [BUSY] appears on the screen.
5. Fixes minor issues.

----------------------------------

Meh - yawn! for me.

Not solve 30 min limit
Not fix implementation of high resolution IBIS shift to providing raw
Not bring AEB to electronic like the existing r8 menu
.....

It should be mentioned that they also issued new (similar meh updgrades ) to 1xdiii, r3, r8, r6ii

My point was: There was never a dBASE I. They started at 2, to make it seem more mature and better tested. Version number inflation.

I am hoping this means they will support TLS 1.3 with modern cipher suites, because reports are that macOS will refuse all FTPS and SFTP connections with the previous versions of the R3 firmware. Apple are obeying the relevant networking standard there, which says the old encryption is too insecure to use. TLS 1.1 (what the R3 supports) was deprecated by the relevant networking standards body in March 2021, 8 months before the R3 was released.

Canon releasing it now probably has a lot to do with current/imminent Windows betas also disabling TLS 1.1. They announced in August they would be doing that in September.
