Skimmed the B&S, mostly in the high-$5K USD range, most want more for PP G&S, one is F&F only (on something this expensive!), and I am confident that shipping up to Canada would add more.

So I went to eBay, "800mm f/6.3 nikon -(custom, berlin)". There is a $5300USD all-in example, looks VG or better in the pictures, on the way to me now, ordered last night and will receive tomorrow - from Japan.

Traditionally, B&S has been maybe 10% less than eBay, because eBay sellers eat the eBay fees.

So I'm expressing surprise.

Hopefully you don't ever need to have it serviced... it might b expensive having to ship it back to Japan.

What do you mean by “berlin”?

And on repair, one advantage is buy insurance offered on Ebay, they don’t care about gray market origins.

1) I will. Not immediately on receipt, but after some weekend testing, weather permitting.
2) well, eBay has good return policies, as does PayPal, so I'm double-protected.

1) "berlin" - the "-" sign means to exclude something in eBay search results, so I excluded "berlin" (and "custom") to take an old lens out of the results.

2) On repair, didn't know about eBay insurance - might use it in future. But in Canada, Nikon will service anything. It's just warranty that must be from Canada.

That must have changed recently. In the past, they have refused to service any grey-market products, whether you were willing to pay or not.

I hope it works out. But there is a big difference in pricing between "VG" which basically means heavily used/heavy wear, and well treated/looked after gear.
You need to compare like condition vs like.

And be sure to check for fungus. I've been batting 500 with stuff from Japan...

Don’t know anything about this lens, but my experience with buying from Japan is that they tend to exaggerate the cosmetic condition but are truthful about how well the gear works. So, the key is to check the images really carefully.

Also, check whether their feedback is based on similar items. I was scammed years ago by a Japanese seller. PayPal came to the rescue in the end.

Buying on Ebay is far safer than selling. Plus a 1 year warranty is cheap from Allstate

one factor in buying from Ebay vs FM is the warranty you can usually get on Ebay. And some of the Japanese have 30 day return and they pay for shipping. I bought a Nikkor 300mm PF from Japan and it came with a cheap plastic tripod foot. I sent it back on their dime with no hassle.

I suspect that this is more a function of the perceived relative scarcity of the lens though I don't think it aligns with the actual inventory. Having sold a fair amount of gear on FM, this case is likely an anomaly and most gear is selling for less rather than more. Paypal's fees are crushing and when one figures in SH&I, I can say that margins have narrowed dramatically. Recently, I placed a lot of gear up for sale and priced it barely above what resellers offered (anywhere from $10-100 above, depending on the item). I was surprised by the number of lowball offers that I received. In the end, some users revised their offers upwards when they were informed, but for other items, it was a lot easier boxing it up and sending it for free to the reseller.

They have. When I sell stuff on eBay, the price is suppressed because Canadian buyers now pay an additional 13%HST, which should not happen - I'm not a business. Buying, same thing.

Anything from Japan (or the US) will cost me the HST too across the border. Nothing with this price tag just slips through.

So I surfed kijiji for a while, kept my eye on FM for a Canadian buyer with a good price... then found Japan.

My experiences from Japanese sellers have been good. We'll see on this one.

Saw a Nikon 600TC listed for $12800 on eBay from a very reputable Japanese store, I was tempted but knowing Nikon doesn’t service anything not purchased from Nikon US dealers even if you pay, I didn’t pull the trigger. I just put my name on the wait list for the 600TC, it may take two years, LOl. I have the Sony 600GM right now but I love the idea of a built-in TC.

Vistek sold an "open box" 800mm f6.3 for C$7600 earlier this week. I was tempted to buy it and arrange to pick it up in Calgary where I would only have to pay 5% GST.

I guess demand has now eased up quite a bit for this lens.

Cosmetically, it is as good as the pictures. The glass is pristine. All mechanicals are smooth. VR works perfectly. Pictures are tack sharp. There are some marks inside the hood, but cosmetic only (looks like a tree branch scraped the inside, a tiny bit).

I could have paid a couple of hundred more and had a Canadian warranty (others mentioned vistek, which was selling an open box), but didn't know about that when I purchased.

So I'm happy

Next time I'll look at that. I self-insure for cheap stuff, but for this it might have been worthwhile.

Wanted to comment on that before. Agreed, psychology will have factored into it.
