The heron then dropped the fish on the shoreline and left it there. I guess it thought the fish was too wide to swallow.

Too bad for the GBH though.

When we had the pond, gave it up due to GBHs & Egrets, Raccoons and water sanctions, either a GBH or Egret caught one of our Koi fish and the bird had some problem with it. The fish ended up under some stuff and unfortunately passed away. I found it when it was too late.

The pond system where we live has hundreds, if not thousands, of koi. Most of them will be eaten by river otters, of which we just had a family of seven visit us. Herons and kingfishers also take quite a few.
