I’m looking for guidance on the right MacBook Air or Pro so that I can quickly edit Z9 uncompressed RAW files. My 2018 MacBook Pro has 2.4Ghz Core intel Core I7 processors, Radeon Pro 560x 4GB Intel UHD Graphic card and 32GB of Memory. This set up works but processing gets bogged down: buffering is the norm when I work with Lightroom Classic.

I shoot youth baseball and typically have a few thousand images after a game. Even when shooting JPEGS I still have problems with computer processing speed. If anyone can help me out with the right computer set up, I would greatly appreciate it.

The process I follow when upgrading is to aim for the top of the line. It's not future proofing but it does stave off the need to repurchase for a longer period of time. Then of course the wet blanket on that following is the finances. From what you described I'd seriously consider a MBP M2 MAX with 64gb ram and at least a 1 TB SSD. Back when only the M1 was out I went with something similar and the shock of processing speed over my old Intel based MBP was quite impressive. Fast forward today and the files are again bigger etc and the speed, most likely 'cause I'm now use to it and don't have a fresh comparison to the old MBP, doesn't seem as great. In short, get the MBP M2 at the absolute highest config your wallet can stomach.

Simply put ... do NOT get the AIR if you are looking for processing. It is essentially the same processing capability as the iPad Pro. It is fine, works well, etc. But ... after purchasing (and returning) M1Max with 64GB, M1 Pro with 32GB and then getting the 15" MB Air (15" is my preferred size), I returned the MBA and got the M2 Max with 64 GB.

I understand that $$$ is a thing. But, my bottom line threshold would be an M1 MBP Pro with 32GB (if you can still find a refurb in that config). The Max offers the dual GPU encoder ... NOTE that LR's DENOISE uses the GPU. Mostly the MAX gets touted for video, but if you're gonna go use DENOISE, you'll be rather disappointed with the AIR's performance in that regard.

You used the word "quickly" ... the MB Air comes up short in that category. It is fine for general use, or "not in a hurry". Also, the MB Air's display is NOT on par with the MBP. A few other things too, but bottom line (again), NOT the Air (as much as I liked its form factor at 15").

Did I mention, NOT the MacBook Air.

Another data point of consideration is that the MacBook Air tops out at 24GB RAM at 100GB/s transfer rate.

MBA / Base MBP - 24 @ 100GB/s
MBP Pro - 32 @ 200GB/s
MBP Max - 32/64/96 @ 400GB/s

Even if you got a Max with only 32GB of RAM, you'd still be processing your RAM at 400GB/s vs. 200GB/s in the Pro, or with the Air/Base at 100GB/s.

You said you wanted "quickly", the MBA's 24GB at 100GB's second is very adequate ... but, pales in comparison to the others, and does not inspire the notion of "quickly" ... well, at least not once you've tasted the others.

HTH

Btw ... Apple has a very good return policy. Get an Air and see if it meets your needs. If not, return it. Try something different. That, or one of the MBP configurations. I bought / returned four MacBooks before deciding which one was the one for me (fifth one). They were always very easy to return, and I never got any flack about it ... they were very sincere about it being no problem because they wanted me to find the right one for me. Got to the point that we laughed about it, but never at any time did they give my any grief or hardship about it.
