p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Landscape Lens for R7

I've come to the R7 from the 7Dii. My main interests were wildlife, aviation and garden imagery. However I've now started to do more landscape photography. My primary lenses for landscape are the Canon 10-18, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (non VC) and Canon 70-200 f4. On a recent landscape shoot it was apparent how much better quality the 70-200 images were SOOC compared with the 17-50. This has seriously made me look for an upgrade on this lens. I've considered the Canon 16-35 f4 but concerned this would leave a big hole in focal length until 70mm. I've checked my Lightroom data and 1/3 are taken at 17mm, 1/3 at 50mm with the remainder at a variety of focal lengths between.
Any advice on an upgrade much appreciated please... especially if it doesn't bankrupt me !

Welcome to FM.

I have the Canon 16-35 f4L and 70-200 F2.8L IS II or 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 IS II where I plugged the hole between the two with an inexpensive, small and light weight Canon EF 50mm macro on my 7D that later on was replaced by full frame cameras.

The 50mm Macro was largely for close-up and to lighten the load for travel/hiking.

The EF 50mm macro is ok at wider aperture openings (lower numerical f number value) settings however is super sharp at smaller aperture opening (large number) settings that I use most often anyway.

I also have the Canon EF 24-70 f4L for mostly event and family.

I bought the RF 14-35 4L IS USM during the B&H sale and it's wonderful on the R7 for landscape. It's almost too wide on my R but is a more useful range, at least for me, on APS-C. The .38X quasi macro range is nice too. It is a sharp lens and matches in terms of image quality with my RF 24-105L and RF 70-200 4L. It is way an outlay of cash and I bought it during a weak moment but have no regrets. I still own an old EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM and, while a good lens, the RF 14-35 4L IS USM is much sharper along the periphery, has much better flare control and movie servo is way smoother. Plus, the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM is heavy and huge, especially with the adapter.

16-35mm f/4 L IS should be absolutely fine on a cropper, and you will have a nice full frame lens for your inevitable camera upgrade

On 8K full frame it is fine, but not perfect. Wide end is much better than long end. 35mm is emergency use really. For its intended purpose it is mostly acceptable trade-off. It is unlikely you would notice anything major within the cropper frame. They now go for next to nothing so you might as well pick up a clean copy.

I appreciate that leaves quite a gap and you could fill that with a nice Sigma ART 50mm f/1.4. The cheap little Canon 1.8STM is perfect for landscapes between f/5.6-8 if thats your only goal; they are not great at wider apertures and STM motor is nasty. Well, the zooms won't be any sharper than that anyway.

There may be crop specific 16/17-50/70 something lenses. I have no experience with any. the-digital-picture has a database of lens sample chart crops so you can have fun comparing the whole lot. It must be said they may not be always representative of performance at infinity, and there is a copy to copy variation.
Actually there is a crop frame Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. I think I would have that in your shoes and it works great for video too.

Agree with Gochu, I use my 14-35 a lot on my R7. The APS-C range of 22-55 is fine for general scenery. The RF-S 18-150 is also good and versatile but not an L if you are picky. I also supplement my R lenses with the EF-S 10-18, 24 STM, 35 and 60 macros. These all work really well and are not too awkward with the adapter. I have to mention the RF 100-400 which is light weight and great in good light. This adds up to a pretty complete kit IMHO.

I'm currently using the 18-55 STM and generally happy using it. I'd think that the 16-35/4 is better, but it's not necessarily easy to get a better lens than a good 18-55 imo. DPP'S lens corrections applied to raw files help, would be a good idea on 10 18

You might get the 50/1.8 rf if you use 50mm a lot. I usually use 50/1.8's stopped down, especially f/8.

Really liked the 17 35 Sigma on aps, the 18-55 is lighter , better macro, has more range. 17 35 really good though

There are a number of 17-70 (and -ish) lenses available in EF-S that would work on APS-C RF.

I don't have an RF camera to test it on, but the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 OS | C that my wife uses on her 77D works just as well on my EOS M cameras. Might be worth testing out?

Thanks to everyone for their input. It looks like an ef 50mm might be the way to go as an interim stage. I don't think I'm especially wedded to 50mm as a focal length, it's just where I run out of zoom I think !
I've had a brief look online at alternative 17-50/70 zooms as suggested but I don't think I'll see that much improvement quality wise from what I'm using
Ultimately I imagine if I get the 16-35, I'll need to start saving for a 24-70/105 to pair with it as I do like the convenience a zoom offers

The EF10-18s is generally excellent, and gives the equivalent of a 16-28mm FF.

Though the EF16-35mm F4 is one of the best, it's only 25.6mm wide on an APS-C; hardly WA by current standards.

I had the Tokina 11-16 2.8 which I really liked.

Thanks for the further replies unfortunately I can't respond yet to individual posts as I don't have the requisite number of posts. However please note I already own the 10-18 and I'm looking for suggestions to replace the 17-50 lens but concerned my initial choice of 16-35 would leave a large gap until the 70mm of my 70-200

My Sigma 17-50 VR is great on my DX Nikon bodies in both visible light and IR.

In that case, I found the EF 15-85s to be generally excellent, and the equivalent of a 24-105 FF.

"This is not a Canon L Series Lens (as of the date of this review, Canon has not released an EF-S L lens), but the 15-85 IS has many L lens qualities including three aspherical elements and one UD glass element."

Agree on the 15-85is. It was my most used general purpose lens on all of my APS-C bodies ranging from Xsi to 70D to 7D2. It shooting wider than 17/18 was noticeable, and valuable for me, and often relegated to my 10-22 to infrequent use for wide, and the range to 85 made it a great partner to the 100-400. I kept it after selling off my 7D2 and moving to an R6 (although use an RF 24-105 with that) in anticipation of a mirrorless APS-C coming at some point. I now use it adapted to an R7.

For Sy Sez Can I ask please what is the image quality like on the R7, as I'm aware the pixel density can show up deficiencies in some older lenses. This lens certainly looks interesting and seems to have bypassed me previously for some reason

I don't have an R7, or the EF15-85s anymore. Currently only have an R5, but below is a Landscape image taken with my former EOS 7D-1 with the EF15-85s, so it should do much better with a modern R7.

Jus as an addition, I considered the 15-85s equivalent to my "very good" copy of the EF-24-105F4L.

If you want the very best quality Landscape zoom, and you don't mind the focal length limitations, the EF 16-35F4L (25.6-56 on an APS-C body) is without equal, and the only EF lens I kept with my current R/RF system.

Waiʻanae Range at Dusk | EOS R7 and EF-S 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS USM | F5.6, 1/160, ISO 4000

I thought the EF-S 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS USM a fine lens for stills. Its only problem was the ring-USM was too jerky and abrupt for movie servo use in video. I actually shot many stills on my R7 with that lens in the first couple months of R7 ownership. If it had Nano USM or STM I probably would have kept it. I found the RF-S 18-150 kit lens as sharp but more versatile with decent quasi macro, smooth AF for video, a wider zoom range and much smaller and lighter.
