p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why is this happening? R5 and 100-500 photos look scrambled

Maybe I need to post elsewhere, and this is probably an operator error issue and will put my ignorance on display, but so be it. Shooting in RAW and these photos that were just downloaded seem to be weird. Not sure if it is the transfer or the capture causing the issue or something completely different.

I haven't purchased a CF Express card yet, because I was on the fence on keeping this or not. I did not want to purchase for no reason. So, I am using my SD card.

This is only converted to jpg from RAW in LR and made small enough to post.

Any help?

Here is a crop to illustrate the point. This photo is not a great photo, obviously, but in the camera it shows up as nice and sharp, but loaded onto my MB through the SD card slot, it now looks all digitized and blocky in LR.

Have you tried Canon Digital Photo Professional 4?
I have had excellent results from that converting to a TIF.
I have noticed that different RAW converters seem to give varying results.

it just looks slightly out of focus, do you have other images to illustrate the problem? Images when viewed on a camera display often look sharper because you are viewing them at a smaller size.

Bird is a little out of focus and very far away. This is nothing to do with memory card. Other than waiting for a frame filling shot, and in sharper focus you can try Topaz to clean it when it needs a tiny bit of help.

Fair point about the image in the camera vs on the computer.

However, this is multiple images that definitely are in focus. The best way to describe what I see on the computer is rather than a sharp image as I zoom in, it looks like a Minecraft character.

What looks out of focus in the photos I posted, looks like large squares on my computer and in LR. Almost like the photo is a 4 megapixel photo that was blown up or something.

I have not used Canon Digital Pro. Not unwilling to, but everything worked fine in LR yesterday.

Again, it is highly likely that it is operator error.

The reason is that the in-camera display is of the JPEG thumbnail embedded in the Raw file, and the thumbnail has whatever JPEG options you've setup in the menus. Obviously (I hope!) you can always magnify the in-camera image (Magnify button + your fingers) and see more detail—but you're still looking at a JPEG created by the camera. As opposed to the OP processing the Raw in LR and then exporting a JPEG with [hopefully] better corrections.

The bird's pretty distant. Distance is working against you in at least 2 ways: air currents (atmospheric shimmer, atmospheric aberration, or whatever you wish to call it) can reduce sharpness significantly. And while you may not perceive air currents where you are, you don't know what's up where the bird is.

Second, the bird's not occupying much of the frame, so you can't capture much detail in it anyway—even with a high-res sensor like the R5 has.

If you get another opportunity, try to fill more of the frame with the bird, hopefully by getting closer rather than by adding an Extender.

As pointed out, the bird is too far away. It is also a high-contrast image. Those saying the bird is out of focus are assuming it is not blur from camera & subject motion. Try using 1,2000 sec. or faster, even for slow-flying birds.

Again as pointed out, images always look sharper on your camera than on a computer. I never assume I have a really sharp image until I view it on my computer.

I don't know about others, but your crop does NOT appear 'digitized and blocky' on my computer. Maybe it is something to do with your MB.

Otherwise, you should post more examples.

try blowing it p on the camera screen. I have shakey hands and nearly always do this.

A file is a file, and the medium on which it is stored won’t introduce any “blocky” artefacts. I don’t see any such “blockiness” here either on your posted samples.

I appreciate all of the input.

Generally, in my limited experience, if I check an image on the camera, and zoom or blow it up to the max on the screen or in the evf, if it is out of focus or blurred, I can see that it is. At the very least, I can see that it is not "perfect".

This seemed to be an unusual situation. Every image was blocky. When I double-checked what they looked like on the camera, blown up, they looked sharp, or at least normal.

I would upload more images, but I formatted the card. Most of the images were like the sample provided. At least, they were not the quality of images that I would normally keep. I was just force-feeding myself stuff to shoot as I continue to contemplate this camera and lens. Our marsh is dryer than I have ever seen it, and wildlife was sparse. But, my dearth of opportunities and trying to force-feed does not seem to be the problem...if there actually was/is one.

It might have been a setting on the camera. (?). I went through my settings and realized that I had RAW set, which I intended, but JPG was also selected with the setting for JPG quality (I think that is what it is) all the way to the right. That was an accident. But, other than that, and I don't know why that would matter in this case, all my settings were good.

I took some photos last night and they were normal. No blockiness. I am concluding it was just operator error. Like has been mentioned, a file is a file. So, hopefully I don't repeat it, or at least ascertain what I did to cause it at that time.

Thank you for the help. If it happens again, I will upload some better examples. Much appreciated.

Based on the limited information it sounds like you were viewing an intermediate rendition of the raw file in LR, and for whatever reason LR's full demosaicing pipeline was delayed or not being executed properly. Could be related to CPU or GPU load, bug in LR, images accidentally set to use a Smart Preview instead of full resolution, etc...

What happens if you reboot your MB? Do the affected raw files still show the blockiness? That would help differentiate between a raw file issue vs a transient LR issue.

The image you posted is not sharp. It's not 'blocky' or pixelated though.
It's either not focused, blur from you or subject, or atmosphere, or a combination of some or all of those.
The size of this large bird in the frame shows it was far enough away that you would have to be lucky not to have the effects of atmosphere (whatever you want to call it: heat waves, shimmer etc)
