I've tried a few different things over the years and thought this might be useful for others. It would apply to any other camera system - not just leica - but works best for smaller filters so posting it in this sub-forum.
I shoot a lot of b&w film and tend to carry red, yellow, and ND filters. I used to carry them individually in the round or square plastic cases (depending on make), i clearly labeled them and they would take up a bunch of space and rattle around in my bag. Or sometimes i wouldn't have one i needed because it was in another bag etc...
At some point I got a filter wallet. That worked well but it was like carrying a small brick around in my bag (size wise, as it was physically way too large for the leica lens sized filters and they were all stacked up with dividers). I didn't want to mess around with step up/down rings, I've done that before and it ends up being a big hassle when switching lenses.
A few years ago i figured out what's worked out to be a really good solution to this: ThinkTank makes a CF card wallet called the Pixel Pocket Rocket. It's about $20USD and readily available. It has slots to store 8 CF cards (4 rows of 2) and a little zippered pouch for other stuff, it's about 5" x 2" when rolled up.
The CF sized slots are able to store filters up to 46mm in diameter (it's a little snug for 46mm initially but works fine). In this roll i have pairs of 39 and 46mm red, yellow, and ND filters which cover the M lenses i carry. In the zippered pouch i keep these shoe mount ISO tabs: 1 set for b&w, 1 set for color.
I put one of these together for my Leica M system as well as 1 each for Rollei TLR Bay II and Bay III filters - the little leather wallets that Rollie uses are cool and all but i think every single one i have is dry-rotted.
