A couple days ago a legend in wedding photography…. Took his life.

We lost Sam Hassas.
His creative style/thinking/abilities what many of us still aspire too.
Sam create striking images without photoshop.
His generosity was grand.
His humor quick and heady.
A man with a sense of style.
Also an intentional father to his two sons.

His work can be seen on Instagram @samhassas.

I had the pleasure of having him as an instructor and worked with him on a couple of weddings.
As an instructor, at the workshop I attended, he taught creativity.

Thanks Sam.

Sam Hassas was a great photographer with a unique eye towards wedding photography. Years ago when he would show his work, I was impressed with his talent and kindness in his answers to questions on this board.
I wish his family strength and support. At a loss for words right now.

Crazy time to be alive. Go hug your loved ones. Don't let your mind play tricks on you and recognize it for the trickster that it is.

well i really wish i didn't read this. Sam came to Australia around 2010'ish and I gave him a little tour of the south coast of nsw and we chatted camera geek stuff for hours at my house before we went out to dinner with a bunch of photographers up in sydney the next night. Such a lovely guy.

Now this does sadden me.

Never met the chap, but admired his work from afar. Really was something different in a sea of similarity. Especially his use of hidden frames and also his fisheye work.

Thankfully his blogspot site seems to remain online at http://hassasphotography.blogspot.com/

Been thinking about Sam a lot since I heard this desperately sad news. He popped into my thoughts again today and I thought it was time I dropped into FM.

The sense of place here is palpable; I can smell the old furniture, hear the virtual chatter and, I swear to god, I can feel the spirit of those greats that frequented these hallowed halls - Sam Hassas in the front row of that marvellous crowd.

I never met him in real life, but his impact was prodigious. Go well Sam, sending all the kindness and heart in the world to you and your family at this devastating time.

Do the Facebook groups that replaced this group (and many other online forums) have the same reward? I'm not on FB so I don't know. Am I missing out? Is there a virtual wedding photographer coffee shop in 2023 that's got a spark?

I only had the fortune of meeting Sam once, I believe it was to help with a wedding in Dallas, and if I recall correctly you were there as well. That was very early on in my photography career. He definitely had a sort of magnetism about him and exuded kindness. It’s a shame that with so many mourning him that he didn’t feel truly close enough to anyone to lean on and help pull him out of whatever he was going through personally. Hopefully he found his peace and I hope that his boys find the strength to cope with the loss of their father.

Hey Kurtus...
I kind of remember that wedding. I remember another one better.

Sam was talking with Evan. I don't know to what extent though.

anyway... it is not good.

Several of us are trying to work on creating a coffee table book of his work.
All proceeds going to his boys.

I haven't been on this site in a very long time. It breaks my heart that when I logged back in I read this. I loved Sam's work and he was such an inspiration to me. He'll be missed.

No. Not in my opinion at least. Not that I know of at least. I'm a member of probably a dozen different groups that have all fizzled out. A lot of familiar names to the OG FMers are in them but they just don't really hit the same. I think FM circa 2009-2013 was just a special time in photography. In photography history, really. So many people came from this group that completely transformed the history of wedding photography. So many careers were built off the ideas that were traded here. I'd actually love to know how many millions of dollars collectively have been made from a style that really was born right here. The butterfly effect is really incredible if you stop and think about it.

I'd buy one for sure. His poor kids. Fuck. All this stuff just feels so different these days through the lens of fatherhood.

Flickr's SWPB group was also quite special at the time. I remember when Jonas Peterson posted his first wedding. Sam Hurd was there. Ryan Brenizer and I used to co-moderate its (much larger) parent group simply called Wedding Photography.

I wonder where the group-think is in 2023.

I don't do more than a couple weddings/year any longer (we've moved a bunch + started a family+ my day job has done very well for me), but I still belong to most of the FB groups related to photography and wedding photography to keep up with the craft.

99% of the content is (i) <<Insert first name middle name photography>> asking about what to do because they accidentally shot an entire wedding in small jpg format or (ii) asking what preset they can buy to achieve someone's dreamy tones.

Like I said, I do very few weddings anymore but the OG's in this forum were awesome. This forum truly taught me how to be a photographer and that's still something I use in my personal work. I hope that it will continue to survive and not go the way of Sportsshooter.

With the Ai crazy going on in software.... another shooter and came to the same conclusion that the software will make below average shooters okay and average look top notch.

Meaning the craft will take a hit. Less shooters that really understand the craft of wedding shooting - getting it right in camera.

But then again... the industry is shrinking with less people getting married.
