Looks good for static shots, price/weight, (whats not to like): wonder how good the AF is for small fast subject s flying, as they supplied no samples images shown in the link above. Another thing to consider is build quality.

I believe it says manual focus only ?

Yes, I did see they gallery, thus no fast action..
Thanks jgoetz, I did miss that it was manual focus, which cancels my statement about fast AF for action.

IF the quality is good enough they will sell tons of these. Would have been nice if it was F5.6 but not much difference between F5.6 and F6.3 especially in sunny days.

Note the TTA lens at 30lp/mm is at only 50% whereas the Canon is around 90% (blue lines). Huge price difference, but potentially huge quality difference too.

Also the TTA is 1.6kg (3.5lb), not ~300g as posted by CR.

You get what you pay for. Just like the manual-focus mirror lenses, they will initially sell a lot and soon after you will see a lot of used ones at rock-bottom prices.

I think a used EF 400 5.6L would be much better value.

I think this lens would be an exercise in frustration for me. No AF, no IS, no auto exposure would send me back to my film days which I don't care to relive. It does appear to deliver good results for its $329 price point. However, with the RF100-400mm regularly dipping below $500 it isn't a big stretch to buy it over this lens and in return one gets Canon's best AF, IS and auto exposure. IMO, this is worth losing 100mm on the long end. I can crop some get close to 500mm. It is a decent lens and will work well for many people who want to dabble in super telephoto shooting without breaking the bank.

It is also manual exposure and has no communication ability with the camera.

I have a 102mm 1250 f/l Mak scope that is also manual, so this would be like a little brother

The 100-400 is $379 at The Canon Store, but unfortunately, it' just went out of stock.

It looks like an old Spiratone Plura-Coat Sharpshooter 400/6.3, with updated labeling provided by Lieca (i.e. faux Leica). It's probably pretty decent in the frame centre. One thing to watch out for (with the Spiratone); it's prone to coming apart in the middle of the barrel, if its screwed-together barrel gets loose, at all.

I have been toying around with getting a telescope for a long while. Unfortunately, where I live there is too much light pollution to use it to its full potential so I have held back on buying one. I have the RF 100-400mm and paid $499 for it which I thought was a very good price. At $379 it is a screaming deal. At this point, i think my easiest, and best, path to getting to 500+mm is to buy a 1.4x teleconverter giving me something close to the RF 600mm without a weight and bulk penalty.
