The focal length printed on the lens is clearly three digits, and almost certainly 135mm. The only real question is the aperture and additional features.

I am hoping and thinking the line of lenses may include the 135 f/1.8 and maybe a Z mount 28 f/1.4 and 105 f/1.4 in the future. I think the 35 f/1.2S won't have this new designation but will "just" be an f/1.2 S lens. it might even leave room for 35, 50 (or 58), & 85 f/1.4 lenses that are smaller than the f/1.2S lenses as well.

NR rumors now "confirming" 135mm 1.8 stacked full of elements with no defocus.

"Plena" sounds like the name of a birth control or ED pill haha.

The word also seems to mean "full" and is in the same color and font of the word "Noct" on the 58mm lens.

My guess would be either the introduction of some kind of special focus or bokeh control - a cine lens lineup is unlikely as Nikon has no dedicated cine camera and many existing Z lenses are already optimized with video shooters in mind. The teaser video shows us basically nothing but it does have lots of bokeh balls. It also can't be faster than ~F1.8 if the 82mm filter rumor is true, so probably a 135/1.8 with amazing bokeh.

It seems it is the 135mm on the roadmap.
This is supposedly what the Plena designation mean:
‘The new Plena lens will be optimized for smooth bokeh and lack of (or minimized) vignetting‘

OK, Nikon. Wow me. I’m just waiting to be surprised and amazed, because 135/1.8 is a relatively modest specification.

Also, if I can get a 35/2 pancake for my Zf, I’d appreciate it. Call it the Miniscula, or something. And since we’re bringing back old D lenses, can I get a 200/4 macro? Perhaps the Microtronus?

How is a 135/1.8 a modest specification? It’s the fastest 135mm generally available. Sure, Mitakon made a 135/1.4 a while back, but it’s absurdly huge. A 135/1.8 has similar background blur to an 85/1.2.

If nikon made a 135 f/1.4, it’d be designed as a sports lens imo, maybe even as a zoom or built in TC, with very fast AF motors.
I think this is moreso aimed at portraiture, with an emphasis on certain optical aesthetics rather than speed.

Maybe it's a remake of (imo) the best lens ever produced by any company ever; the Nikon 180mm f2.8 AF-ED?

"Modest" is relative. I'd agree with you if we were discussing the next regular addition to the S-Line fast primes. But in the case of the second time in my lifetime Nikon has given a lens a "special name", I expect something not "generally available". Also, arguably, the Noct was pretty "absurdly huge", so...

If it really is a 135/1.8 not even with DC, I'm definitely going to wonder why it has a special name.

If the strange naming is to justify even higher price tag than others ( 50/1.2, 85/1.2 ) then it is quite lame. Hopefully not. However the fact remains that for 50mm and 85mm, we have alternative prime lenses. For 135, there are none, which makes it rather problematic if Nikon only offers special price tag for commonly used focal length prime. See what they introduce in two days.

Nikon has always erred very far on the side of modesty regarding their engineering achievements.

If they think it deserves a special name we can be pretty sure it can be added to the short list of best ever designed lenses, regardless of mount and format.

My guess remains that Plana refers to a technology used in this lens, and the only one I can think of is aspherical elements polishing which is one of the key differentiators between brands these days. This has a tremendous impact on the look of bokeh balls. This was the main issue of the first 3 Otus lenses and remains a huge issue in high ticket recent lenses such as the Canon RF 28-70mm f2.0 that may have the most hideous bokeh balls ever.

Cheers,
Bernard

Latest rumor I heard is that Plena basically indicates that it has the same coating as Noct 58/.95
and it will be a series of auto focus lens. None of the F1.2 lenses will be in Plena series apparently.

This is just what I was hoping. I think a 135 f/1.8 is a great place to start and I would love to see a relatively small (say 550g) 28 f/1.4. I think there could also be f/1.4 lenses at 35, 50, & 85 that would also be in between in price between the f/1.8 and f/1.2 lenses. Maybe the 50 could be a 58 instead. It would fit Nikon tradition to have a 105 f/1.4 as well. I would love to see this line of lenses not only with great coatings, but well polished Asph elements, eleven aperture blades, low vignetting. We have less than 24 hours before we should know a lot more.

From Nikon Rumors;

“ I can now confirm that on September 27th Nikon will announce a new Nikon Nikkor 135mm f/1.8 Plena lens without defocus control. Here is what to expect:

16 elements in 14 groups (massive lens!)
No defocus control like on the old 135mm and 105mm DC lenses
Filter size: 82mm
The new Plena lens will be optimized for smooth bokeh and lack of (or minimized) vignetting”

No nitrogen inside the lens?

One of the best 135 mm lens is the Zeiss 135/2 Apo Sonnar, with 11 elements in 8 group (just). The *old* Canon EF 135/2 L employed 10 elements in 8 groups.
The Sigma 135/1.8 Art has a 13/10 optical scheme.
Let's see if the rumors will be confirmed; I wonder why Nikon needs to complicate its life by using so many elements and groups despite the large mount diameter

I am shattered, so much investment in 50mm f1.2S and 85mm f1.2S, and now they don't even get Plena badge! What have I done, my family will never forgive me for putting the kid's inheritance in line without getting the Plena badge.

On a more serious note, the mystery will unfold in a few hours now, the big question for me is whether I need the 135mm f1.8S Plena when I have the 85mm f1.2S, current thinking is No I don't but can't underestimate the power of purgation of these product launches.

I produced a lot of good images with a Sony 135GM, so anything in that vein will be put to good use in my opinion.

I’m less inclined for a 35/1.2 as too close for me to a 50/1.2 which I own, but a 28/1.4 would be amazing

I’m all in on a 135/1.8 though
