Another entertaining and instructive video from Alen Schaller.

This time discussing Range Focus and shooting from the hip.

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting this. Alan also has a new book coming out based on his Metropolis project (already published in the UK I think):

I like Allan work, he has beautiful images, but images in this video as must pictures shot from the hip, really only look like the camera backfired.
I don't see the beauty in shooting someone up close from the side and passing the image to black and white.

The photos are bad and the videos are unnecessarily trying to be funny but they’re not. I’m not sure why they’re trying to make him a comedian.

I had high hopes for this channel but so far the videos are just silly and the content is quite shallow. There are all kinds of masterclass type videos that are very informative and just get to the point rather than waste time trying to be funny.

This video for example is 10 minutes (like all them other ones) and he doesn’t start talking about shooting from the hip until about the 2 minute mark. The video spends 2 minutes making jokes and being silly. It’s so dumb.

He could’ve said it all in those 2 minutes. Hold the camera straight and practice a lot at home trying to get things in focus. And that’s all he said in the video.

The solution is that if you’re constantly taking these kinds of photos then better get an AF camera and switch it to face detection and go to town. It also has a flip screen so you can see what you’re doing.

@VailJohnson

Maybe lighten up a little.

It’s light-hearted, silly British humour, intended to avoid being pompous or taking himself too seriously. I found the content worthwhile. I have his book, which has some good images, if a little stylised.

Maybe if you’re going to make funny videos then get a funny person and I can laugh watching it instead of getting an unfunny photo nerd to try to be funny. It doesn’t work.

I think they believe just talking about photography and making a video with substance won’t have wide appeal. But this for instance is pretty much a Leica video. Or a video for people who shoot manual cameras. That’s already a niche. It doesn’t have wide appeal.

You learn nothing by the end of it and is still not funny. It’s just annoying.

This is it here with some samples

Don’t you think this is all style and no substance? I would never buy a book such as this one. Why would I want to look at these photos again and again?

Better buy “Found not Lost” from Erwitt. That’s real from the heart photography. No gimmicky crap.

IMO, Alan’s YouTube channel is just like his photos. All style and no substance.

Well I think it's very informative and from an amazing photographer. The take away is if you use the same equipment and practice, practice, practice soon it all becomes second nature.

This is news that you have to practice a lot? 😅

If it was funny it would be worth a watch. But it’s not. IMO. I tried but I won’t be watching again.

Yes. I think if you have an opinion it should be a strong one. Otherwise you don’t really have an opinion, it’s just a thought.

If you like this sort of high contrast B&W look then look at the work of Phil Penman. Those photos are a lot more powerful than Alan’s. Alan is okay, but they’re trying to make him some sort of YouTube star. It’s strange. He’s a genius for a young crop of street photographers that are easily swayed by styles. He’s Instafamous. But other than being a Leica spokesperson, Alan’s photography is what I said. I mean his most famous photo is a mannequin in a store front. All style no substance.

Try Phil Penman. And as a photographer he has the resume to back up his talent. Just look at his work.

Alan is a failed musician who found a style of photos that he could do and made an internet business out of it. He worked hard at it and he deserves whatever success he has, but that doesn’t change my opinion of his photos.

There is something in what you say, but it all seems so categorically stated, which seems to me to be unnecessary.

“The photos are bad”.

“trying to be funny, but they are not”.

“it’s so dumb”.

“unfunny photo nerd”

“it doesn’t have wide appeal”.

“gimmicky crap”.

All your opinions, and none of them remotely objective. Not even very insightful opinions from my perspective. So why try to foist them on others? It’s a bore.

His humour does not appeal to you, fair enough; but why do you think you are some sort of arbiter on humour? Others may well enjoy the self-deprecation, and the willingness to play the fool, and not to take himself too seriously.

Obviously, his YouTube channel is intended to generate an income stream, just as all the other Youtubers do. Just as his book will. At least this one has some genuine talent and thought behind it. I just enjoy his photographic approach as one among many, and obviously he has analysed what he does quite well, and tries to impart his experience for the benefit of others. We are all free to learn from it.

As I said originally, maybe lighten up.

Alen is kind of a corny guy all of time, YouTube or not. If that is not your cup of tea then so be it. Probably best to watch someone else. I think Penman is as good a choice as any for you.

Alan's channel already has over 25K subscribers, and this video already has over 21K views Those are very strong numbers for such a new channel. many photography channels never reach these number after years of being on line.

Steve all this from a guy who has been banned how many times here and just keeps changing is ID and coming back. Kinda like whack a mole for Fred I would imagine.

His words sound kinda bitter and jealous.
