T5 “MF Assist” Behavior

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · T5 “MF Assist” Behavior

I have found [so far] the “MF Assist” setting to not be persistent when powering the camera off and then on again.

Example: Set up the camera to use “MF Focus Peaking Highlight Blue”. Return to shooting mode and the camera behaves as expected highlighting the in focus areas in blue. Now switch the camera off & back on, “MF Focus Peaking” is switched off. 😡

I’ve tried all the “MF Assist” choices, micro prism, split…etc. they all behave as described above.

I’ve also tried different lenses, Voigtlander, Sigma, Fuji. Still the “MF assist” setting is not persistent across a power cycle.

Is there another setting somewhere to cause MF Assist to be persistent across a power cycle?

UPDATE

Oh my this is bizarre. I added a “My Menu” entry to control “MF Assist”. And, get ready, the setting is now persistent across a power cycle. BUT I can’t switch it off. “MF Assist” always returns to what ever was set up!

That sounds like a good ol' fashioned bug to me. Are you on the latest firmware? If not, update and retry; if yes, report to Fuji.

Yep,, latest firmware. But I have an idea about what is happening. I need to do a little more work to confirm. I post later.

Disregard what I said about adding a "My Menu" setting. It is/was one of several things I did to understand this situation, but really has no effect.

The real culprit is the new way the T5 operates WRT the custom settings banks C1-C7. In the "old days" C1-C7 controlled mainly image settings such as Grain, WB, saturation...etc. not much more. NOW, __any__ camera setting can be memorized and recalled via C1-C7. Somehow I had set "MF Assist" to "PEAK", and memorized it in one of the "C" settings. When the Camera powers up it looks at the last C setting chosen and restores the camera to that state. So if "MF Assist Peak" is ON and set in the C menu, when the camera powers up "MF Peak will be On" and Vice-versa.

Refer to page 132 of the manual for a full discussion of setting and editing settings. Pay special attention to the entry on page 139--"AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING". If enabled, as you make changes to the camera while in use, those changes are recorded in whatever C menu you are in. This may explain why some are noticing the camera in a "strange state" after a power cycle.

Sorry for the Red Herring earlier, the camera is very new to me and I keep tripping over subtle changes like this.

Thanks for the report back on your issue. Definitely a lot to learn with these new bodies. I'm surprised how many subtle changes were made in the X-T5 compared to the X-T3. Most are positive, IMO, but plenty of room for confusion.

Thanks. Indeed plenty of room…

Given all that can be “customized & recalled”, I’m beginning now to image how the custom settings banks can be used to simulate a “whole camera” emulation, not just IQ settings. Think one bank set up it emulate a Leica M typ 240, or a Q2 Monochom. IQ and camera control all in a custom setting ready for use in an instant.
