p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Oaxaca City and the Dia de Muertos

The dates for the Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) are mainly October 31 to November 2 but preparations start a week ahead in some places and go on afterward too. If you are fortunate enough to have a Mexican community near you, you may have your own local Day of the Dead events. If not, there are many locations in Mexico to visit, but I think Oaxaca City is the best.

Oaxaca a wonderful city with many cultural events and even more so during the Dia de Muertos. You can get direct flights to the city from the states (Houston for one) and it is a safe upscale place to visit. There is good lodging too (even a Holiday Inn Express) and wonderful restaurants. Indeed, many top chefs around the States come from Oaxaca. You don't have go by tour, there are many events in the center of the city but your hotel or tour offices can arrange taxis or other transportation to the cemeteries or other sites for events there. Here are some images from our visit.

Thanks for looking - Charlie

My wife and I love Oaxaca and benefited from the services of a guide, Suzanne Barbezat at [email protected]. We used her to drive us to locations outside of the city. Within Oaxaca walking around worked very well and no need for a guide or a car.
