p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Leica Please fix this issue

I love my M11, but there is one thig that is driving me nuts. It is so simple and obvious that I can't believe Leica lets it go on.

There is no way to disable the touch focus on the rear screen. True, it doesn't negatively affect me when I am shooting through the range finder, or shooting landscapes from the back screen on a tripod.

But if I am hand holding and shooting from the back screen the focus point will change to the last place that was accidently touched on the back screen. Then when I turn the focus ring even the tiniest amount the focus aid zoom goes to the focus X position, usually way to the side of the frame. This makes focusing on the subject impossible, and the focus aids feature useless. In fact these become detriments.

Worse is when I try to use the very expensive VisoFlex EVF. It is located in the center of the camera, so when I look through the camera my nose inevitably touches the rear screen and this moves the focus X. Again when I try to focus the camera zooms to some unknowable place in the frame. I do sometimes want to use the VisoFlex when shooting my longer lenses wide open with very shallow depths of field. When I can do this, my M11 creates amazing images that I love. However it such a frustrating problem that I have about given up on using the VisoFlex. What a waste of money and capability for me.

Leica, this should be a straight forward firmware fix. Please do it.

Pretty please.....

This doesn't entirely solve your problem, but I think you can change the live display mode to only use the EVF when in live view. So when you are using the EVF your nose shouldn't change the focus point on you.

Might help with the Visoflex at least.

You can write to Leica and request this option. Maybe some day it’ll come to the M. Useless for me since I don’t use EVFs. Which is the whole reason I shoot a rangefinder. Rangefinders aren’t the best tools for a great EVF experience.

Brilliant Formula4Speed I tried it out and it does work. So now I can use the VisoFlex as a focus and recompose tool the way I wanted.

However, in this mode I can only review images and use the menu system while looking through the EVF. My work around for that is to assign the EVF/LCD options to the programable top button. That way I can quickly toggle through these setting and do pretty much what I need to quickly and easily. It is a small thing to hold down this button and set/reset it to my normal use or the EVF use when I am doing a session with the VisoFlex.

Of course this hack is a bit inconvenient but I can live with it. I still would much prefer to just have the touch screen enable/disable capability.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Vail,

Are you sure that menu is for the M11? I cannot find a Menu with those selections in it.

My Display Setting Menu only offers:

LCD BRightness
EVF <> LCD
Eye Sensor Sensitivity
EVF Brightness

The EVF <> LCD SubMenu only offers:
LCD
Auto
EVF EXtended
EVF

None of those has a SubMenu.

Edit:

OK I figured it out.

If I set my Display Settings to EVF EXtended I get pretty much what I wanted.

Without VisoFlex mounted the camera works the same as before..

Play -> I can review my images
FN -> displays live view on the LCD
Menu -> Display the Menu on the rear screen

With The VisoFlex Mounted:
Play -> Auto switches between EVF and LCD depending on which I am looking at.
FN -> is only through the EVF no matter which I am looking through. But this does disable the touch screen focus on the
LCD. Great
Menu -> Auto switches between EVF and LCD depending on which I am looking through

In EVF EXTENDED mounting the VisoFlex closely resembles the functionality I was using the programable button for, but even better. I will be leaving my camera in EVF EXTENDED from now on.

Fantastic work guys. I am most appreciative of the help. The FM community is such a valuable thing. I learned something very important today. I always love when that happens. I can now shoot conveniently the way I wanted to.with the VisoFlex mounted or unmounted.

I think they solved that problem in the 1930's by including a rangefinder

Glad you got a solution figured out, because my next suggestion would be a straight trade for my M240 which would remove any temptation you have to use live view at all.

I take it one step further and actually change auto magnification to the top right button. This way if something silly like a focus point got moved, I can still un-magnify easily and re-compose or do whatever I need to.

That way I at least control when it magnifies etc.

I do however agree with you. Leica should really allow us to lock the touch screen or better yet, lock focus point for anything but the directional pad.

Which I use 99% of the time and love. However, as a favor I have a fitness shoot for a friend's girlfriend coming up. It will involve using strobes in low light. I will primarily be doing the shoot with my Sony A1 which mechanically and focus wise is very straight forward. I wanted to also do some shots with my M11. When doing a practice setup for the strobes it was much easier and faster to use the EVF because the ambient light is so low. But the constant moving of the M11's focus point was driving me nuts. I have a solution for that now at least.

I don't know why I let myself get talked in to doing things like this...

I tried it that way also. But then I realized that a quick 1/2 press of the shutter button resets the magnifier anyway. This is just as convenient for me as the function button, and I can use the function button for something else.

Even though I have found a way to do an acceptable work around, I would still just prefer a way to turn off the touch functionality of the rear screen. I really don't like the touch for anything. I have to put up with it on my phone, but shouldn't have it forced on my camera.

That’s the M10R manual. The M11 also has a manual. I’m sure it’s in there. Just saying; read the manual. Seems like nobody ever does.
