A couple shots from in and around the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy. Quite a chaotic mess, but came away with some interesting takeaways. A festival that has been around since the 1920s celebrating all things Italian-American.

Ilya, being of Italian descent, my mother and her family fled facist Italy for America in the 1920's, I love all things Italian!
Just fine crisp images here! And the priest handing out a Holy Card!
#1 is FUN!!! Love smiles when they are not seen so often around here.

I hope you had a chance to taste the food!

Dan,

Thank you for the kind words! It was quite a photogenic time to be out, once you got over the madhouse of people and found little side streets and clear spaces to plant yourself, observe and compose.

My wife is a huge Italophile, so we too enjoy all things Italian and Italian-American. The importance of Italian immigrants and now Italian-Americans in my hometown of San Francisco, and now my adoptive home of NYC can't be overstated...critical to the fabric that made both of these cities. I will say, however, that the Feast of San Gennaro has changed over the years and the roots have been somewhat lost in favor of a smorgasbord of chaos and drunken shenanigans in the evening. Sadly, Italian-American food doesn't quite sit well with my stomach/workout regimen...so I rarely if ever partake. Roman and Tuscan food agreed with me well when I was in Italy just a few months ago, and I genuinely enjoyed my travels around the country.

While I am generally a Francophile and Iberophile, I do love Italian culture and way of life, and look forward to returning in short order!

Thank you for posting photos from the Feast, I might take a camera tomorrow evening when we go for sausage, pepper and onions heros and a bag of zeppola.

Everyone gets sick on Feast food but it's part of the culture and the Feast is sponsored by Tums.

My grandfather arrived from Rome in 1917 and Little Italy is not the same as it was 30 years ago because most of the Bosses are dead and their kids went to college and work on Wall Street.

PM me if you want to meet tomorrow night.

Haha it really is tradition, I totally get it. Sadly, my Jewish upbringing brings with it a very sensitive stomach! On one hand I'm glad that I didn't experience the more turbulent times in NYC, on the other, I'm happy to be here now while NYC has its troubles but nothing like the past.

Would love to link up. PM incoming.

You are a "multi-cultural" food-o-phile! That is a plus! I agree with your synopsis of olde versus now in a parade. And I agree also with that. Sorry there is no "edit Tool" to eliminate that which blemishes the original purpose of a parade/ceremony. So we try to turn a negative into a positive. The rest is what is happening in today's world.

Maybe we 3 should get together next year for our local Italian American Festival?

Dan, absolutely...too easy to dwell on the negative. It's a fun time, just a full-blown shitshow.

I never say no to a trip down to the DMV area!

Amen brother! It is called "brainwashing". A person sees it enough, or its "likeness on various media outlets, an one begins to think it is the correct path to follow. Not the case in ALL situations.
My "situation" is that I regard some olde fashioned customs of my heritage to be the correct path. It is about respect!

I have NOTHING against going over to the botche ball court and getting wasted,(1 alchoholic drink to me is "wasted", if that is what these people are promoting or not), but PLEASE let the origins of the festival/ceremony be honored first! It is a TRADITION not a "Happening(in the olde hippie sense of the word...and yes I grew up in the 60's)"!

Haha good to know that I'm not the only one who is pretty much a gonner after 1 drink! Ah yes, the hippies...another flashback to my time in SF. I went to middle and high school in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. My school was across the street from Jerry Garcia's home!

Haha no worries, keep me posted! My wife is Ukrainian, but enjoys the fact that I do all the cooking. She does all the cleaning. I got the fun job =D. To her dismay, though, I only cook middle eastern cuisine due to my work travels!
