Hello Fmer's
It has been a while since I logged in and had a quick question!
A lot has changed here (I don't see lens reviews anymore!)

I have a local seller who posted 70-200 F2.8 IS. I think it is the first generation, if not 2nd. (anyway to tell?)
She said she inherited it with 5D IV and does not know the history of it but it looks good and hardly used.
She is selling it for $350 (the lens) but wasn't sure if it was a good price if it was 1st version.
I do have 130 F2 which I love so much but wasn't sure if it was a worth investing.
Any thoughts or recommendation?
Thanks!

If it's a 2.8 IS that's a great deal. The IS v1 was the weakest of the bunch but still a great lens and a very nice deal at $350. The Non-IS version usually sells closer to that range.

Thank you. I haven't bought lenses for a while and was wondering.
How's 5D IV with 100 macro for $1500 sound?

Specify the macro version, make sure it's not the old version.

I looked at the picture it looks like old macro 100mm f2.8
That kind of answers it I guess.

It's a good deal even if v1. Keh has a BGN v1 for almost double. The knock on v1 is 2.8 performance at 200mm.

I'd think there's a II on it if it's a v2, it's a really great deal if v2. Assuming glass is fine and everything is OK

Low mileage 5D4 might be a little bit hard to find. Only 2 of mpb's 5D4's under 100k yesterday. $1500 might be good though if you get low actuations, plus you get 100mm

I would not want to pay more than $1400 for a mint 5D4 and 100 macro IS. $950 for 5D4, $450 for macro IS package deal. The old one is worth less than $200 I would guess.

I looked at 5D4's on mpb yesterday. If it's nice & under 100k you're looking at over $1300, plus the macro lens, potentially another $150-200.

I realize that's retail but might be better off paying a little more than you ought to to a private party and get a nice one

Thanks for the replies!
I don't think it is 100 mcaro IS. It is the middle one from the picture.

Probably worth <$200.
But it has been a great help! Thanks for replies!!
And the 5d4 with unknown shutter count + 100 macro.
Wonder what kind of photography the person did..

What do you shoot? If you can sacrifice some megapixels and you want to shoot action or start dabbling into video, the Canon R6 mirrorless body can be found for around 1K. All you need is a $99 adapter to use your EF lenses. Not that the 5D4 can't shoot action or video, but if I was getting back in I would start with a lightly used R6 for a grand. I don't think there's a better bang for the buck out there unless you need the MP of the 5D4.

Now you say that, I can't agree more with you. So thank you.

To be honest, for last 5-10 years I only shot during travel and for families for small occasions.
I have a child now and I am definitely taking out my camera more and found this.
I will take your advice and stay away from 5d IV which I don't think I would need for decades.
But for 70-200, I will grab and and enjoy it for outdoor.
135 was a bit constrained but I love it so much.
35L is another lens I love indoor.
70-200 could be a good addition once my child can run around.
Thanks again for great advice. I really appreciate it!

For shooting toddlers or kids you will like the AI of the mirrorless bodies with face and eye detection. No more having to worry about limited AF area or having to place that little AF point on the face at f/1.4 on your 35. The R6 does it all really well. If you want to spend more money there's a lot of other options but you won't see much difference shooting your kids.

If you were a member of the B&S forum here you could just post a WTB ad for an R6 and you'll likely find a mint one, if not a new in box from the recent sales where they were going for $1100 brand new. Good luck.

I’ve got the EF 70-200 2.8L IS (V1)
I had read the reviews that said it was soft , tried it on my 7d and wide open it was indeed soft, so put it away and used another lens instead. Then last year I was out using my 6d/5diii and decided to try again.
Lol, it was totally different. 2.8 is very useable, stopping down to 3.2 does improve IQ, but 2.8 is still fine to me.

I've been using mine for 15 years, through three repairs; it has outlasted three cameras as I'm now on the fourth (Z9). Still feeling no need to swap it for anything, although after getting the 100-400 6 years ago the 70-200 has been seeing less action than before.

I think 70-200/2.8 L IS was my first L lens when I switched to the Canon 20D almost twenty years ago. I've shot sports and portraiture with it and it's outstanding performer. Love the bokeh and sharpness. I haven't used it for a long time mainly because of its weight and heft and even thought about selling or trading it. However when I bought the R6MKII earlier in the year I thought about using the telezoom lens again. The AF speed and accuracy is even better with the R6MKII. I've already used it three times this year for a tennis shoot and two beach shoots. I think it is a great lens if I am not going to do a lot of walking. It's very versatile and plan to keep it for a few more years.
