For the life of me my focus square keeps moving around and want to know how to make it stay put no matter what buttons I touch
I thought I had it set right but the bastard keep moving on me
I also have the toggle stick turns off and it still moves around
Thanks

This may (or may not?) be related to an ergonomic design issue that I have with the XT5. (I assume that by "T5" you mean "XT5?")

It is very easy to accidentally bump the joystick controller when holding/handling the camera, and if the camera is still on when you do this you'll move the AF square.

When I shoot street I often walk with the camera held down at my side, and with one finger on the power switch. If I normally tend to turn the camera off if I'm not likely to make a shot immediately, but if I think something is coming up I turn the power switch on without lifting the camera, just so that I'll e ready.

Now I'm holding the turned-on camera down at my side in one hand... and because of the way things like up when holding it in the usual way on the "grip" side it is very easy to hit the joystick can move the focus square. In my case I kept finding in stuck in a corner on the left side of the frame before I figured out what was happening. I've tried to re-train myself to hold the camera in such a way that I'm less likely to hit the joystick, but it still happens. Now I'm working on remembering to check the position of the AF square when I raise the camera.

I like the camera a lot and it is other wise a great performer — but this is an issue for me, too.

Dan

I had this on my X-T3.

It was my nose touching the sceeen when I brought the EVF to my eye. Touch functions were active and moved the focus box.

Touch screen and touch controls are two different menu items in the X-T3 if I recall correctly. I don't have my X-T5 yet to check.

Make sure the following is not on:

WRENCH BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > TOUCH SCREEN SETTING > EVF TOUCH SCREEN AREA SETTINGS

Missed that. Touch screen active?

(I see someone else mentioned that.)

For anyone trying this,I think that the following might clarify one potential bit of confusion about t navigating the menus:

"WRENCH BUTTON" --> BUTTON/DIAL SETTING --> TOUCH SCREEN SETTING --> EVF TOUCH SCREEN AREA SETTINGS --> OFF

By default, your camera should be set up this way when you get it. If it isn't, someone changed it.

In my case, the issue is with the joystick controller. I can't really turn it off since I still want to be able to relocate the AF area quickly when necessary. I'm not sure what the solution is to my issue aside from:

1. Me trying to learn to handle the camera in a way such that I never touch that button my accident. (Not easy!)

2. Visually checking the area position every time I raise the camera. Sigh... (Kind of like the periodic need to double-check that the EC button has not moved.)

3. A future improvement of the camera ergonomics to reduce/eliminate this issue. I don't know... something like a double-tap on the controller before it will move the AF area?

That is correct.

Is it different for the x-t5, i can't seem avoid something that's causing the dam center square from moving

Just received my X-T5.

Check and make sure that AF/MF -> Page 3 -> Touch Screen Mode is set to "off."

This is in addition to WRENCH (Set Up)-> PAGE 3 -> BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > TOUCH SCREEN SETTING and turn off all six touch screen options that you see.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, you have turned off all of the settings that allow touch input on the rear screen AND you have disabled the use of the joystick to move the focus area.

If it is still moving, I think you are just going to have to watch it very carefully and determine what input is causing it to move... since it sounds like you have eliminated all of the typical causes.

Thanks

Yeah, Fuji X menus are hard sometimes.
E.g. I'm using manual focus and focus selector is disabled, as well as all touch functions. But when I press focus zoom assist, I can still move joystick and focus square is moving.

Fortunately, X-T series has very powerful menu item - Wrench > ButtonDial Setting > Lock
To disable focus stick completely:
- Lock Setting > Selected Function
- Function Selection > Focus Stick (page 3/7)

It will completely disable accidental move of focus square. Hope that helps.
NOTE: Joystick will still work for other functions, e.g. menu navigation. Only its control as Focus Stick will be locked.

Lock mode can be toggled On/Off by press and hold "Menu Ok" button for 3sec
So when you need to change focus location, unlock, change, then lock.

I've completely turned off ALL functions of the joystick, even the front dial and still the focus points moves around
wish there was a permanent leave focus square in middle command

Can you elaborate a bit more what do you mean by focus point moves?
Is it in center, and then suddenly you realize it's not in center? Did you try the lock focus stick method? Is your focus mode in "S" or "M" and not in "C" ?

I don't think that should make a difference, but I'm open to alternative explanations. That simply determines how the camera auto-focuses, not where the AF area is located. I don't see how being in continuous-AF mode would affect the position of the AF area.

First time-Got it to work on S. My only question is that I held the Menu down for 3 sec to disable, but to get it enabled again appears not to work by holding the menu button again for 3 sec. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Second time-Will not prevent focus point moving with focus stick square.

BTW under the ISO dial I have it set to S also.

Question-How do get to "focus zoom assist" as you mention or is this for Manual focusing only?

It's a bit longer than 3s press, yes it works for unlocking too on X-T5, just hold it longer until yellow lock icon disappears.
S under ISO is for single shutter.

If you press and hold "Disp Back", open page 3 and set e.g. R-DIAL to "Focus Check".
Then single rapid press on Rear Dial will zoom view for ore precise focusing, and rotating Rear Dial is changing zoom area magnification. Focus assist only works if Viewfinder/Screen is not in Dual Mode".
When Focus Stick is enabled - you can move focus area with joystick, but when disables - it will not move focusing square.

OK! figured it out, it was the left selector toggle button, fn4
It was set to move the focus square, how I set it this way will be a mystery
I reassigned it to "none" for now
No more moving focus square !
