I think this is just too big, especially with a 45-100 zoom, for me to take traveling. But I would love to have those image qualities from my foreign places. So, I do think about it.
I'm sure some here have used a GFX for travel. I'd love to hear what it was like, whether you got what you wanted by doing it, and whether you would do it again.
Any sample images would be great to have.
First off — see below — I do not use a GFX system. But I face the same question when deciding what to carry when I travel.
The feelings about this are going to vary a lot. It depends a lot on how photography integrates into your travel, and that issue has its own layers:
- Do you like to travel fast and light (e.g. carry-on only) or are you happy to travel with a lot of checked luggage?
- Does that way you photograph take advantage of the potential of the larger camera? Or does a larger camera potentially interfere with your approach? (To cite a couple of illustrative examples... Are you carrying and using a tripod or do you shoot handheld? Are you photographing landscapes or shooting street? Are you shooting subjects whose appearance might change if they saw you with a Big Camera or not?)
- What are you doing with your photographs? If you are — to cite a possible example — basically uploading and sharing jpgs with friends and family online? Or are you producing very large, high quality images, possibly for print or licensing?
While I don't use GFX, I use a rather large FF system for a lot of my photography. I carry a rather large tripod and a substantial bag of sense and other stuff. This gear, by itself, would be too large to fit into airline carry-on. So I prefer to use a faster, lighter system for travel. In my case this is a Fujifilm XT5 with a small set of prime lenses.
That won't be right of everyone, but since I prefer to stick to carry-on luggage and a lot of my travel photograph is in cities — basically street/urban/travel photography — and I'm shooting handheld, often after dark, I prefer to not be burdened by the larger gear.
But that's me. I'm just highlighting some of the trade-offs to consider. And, with travel, there are always trade-offs.
