I've never much liked Lr but of late it just gets hinker and hinker. Machine: iMacPro, Venture 13.5.2

Problem: Lr won't quit. I go to shutdown or maybe just quit the app and its window disappears but it remains on the menu bar, hangs, and the Quit option is greyed out. I have to go to the Force Quit to get rid of it. I can generally restart it, but once in awhile the whole machine hangs.

So experts please, anyone facing this, have a solution, know where I should go? I do continue to look askance at Venture. Seems too many little nagging things changing or just being weird.

I assume you've rebooted the iMac Pro and the problem still exists? While maybe just a shot at how to fix, it does sound like the LR preferences file could be at fault. It might be worth removing it and have LR automatically rebuild it.

Yeah, done all the standard things like restart, reboot, etc. Never thought of the preferences. The link leads to an interesting bit of digital dance madness. Will try it when I have a chance.

Preferences can often be a source of a problem. Also un-installing and re-installing it may work as well. Logging out and back in of your account sometimes helps.

Do you have Backup enabled (and using it from the shutdown window)?

If so; 1) how large is your catalog (backup can take a long time with 500,000 images) and 2) is your backup location OK (if HD is it health, defragged etc) and lastly, try closing with no backup (if you are using backup).

Thanks for responding.

I use the catalog backup once a week to the 2Tb interior drive. The library - about 1.25Tb - is also backed up weekly to an external 2Tb SSD drive. I use Carbon Copy Cloner (superb program) for the library BU. (There is also a drive for archive, but it's only used when moving files from the active catalog. It has its own catalog.

Never actually counted the number of active files in the library. Actually don't know how to make a reasonable guess. Likely Lr has a tool I'm not aware of.

Still, I can't imagine Lr totally hanging when doing regular name/adjust work. Tis frustrating.

Try making a new catalog, just import a few images into it and see if you get the same issue.

If you don't you could import your old cat into it and see if that resolves it. I would kill preferences and reinstall before trying that though.

In all the posts so far I don't think I saw what version of Lightroom you are using. You need LIghtroom 12.x as prior versions have not been tested and many prior versions of Lightroom have quite a number or problems.
Also, as it turns out, the latest version of Lightroom has a good set of issues by itself.

Yeah, that's relevant. v. 12.4 which I believe is current. I haven't started to work on it yet - bit busy. When I get it done, I'll check back. Thanks to all who have offered advice.
