Folks,

I’m a happy owner of a new A7RV and thoroughly enjoying the camera. At the same time, am also rethinking my lens configuration.

One lens I’ve been thinking of getting for a while is a lightweight medium tele like the 85mm f1.8 to make a nice 20/35/85 combination alongside my 20mm G and 35mm GM (or Sigma 45mm for a really lightweight kit). Right now I’m using a combination of Tamron 70-180mm and 90mm Macro in this range, but could use a smaller and lighter option. Will primarily be used to capture my young children, with the occasional street photography and vacation.

Heard good things about the lens, but it is quite a dated design. How does it perform with the 61mp sensor? And any thoughts on whether alternative lightweight tele options (e.g. Samyang 75mm) might be a better choice?

I would appreciate any input on this.

Oddly I just had this discussion on Reddit with the Sony folk. I have from a 400, all the way down to the 14 prime lenses. I have also bought and sold many of them through my time with Sony. The ONLY lens I have not bought then sold, and the only non GM lens I have is the 85 1.8. By far one of my favorite lenses I own, especially for the money. It took one of the first photos when I went to Sony mirrorless of my son; and the tack sharp on the eye had me sold immediately. I won’t get rid of it ever. I shoot on an A1 and I have had no issues with it at all.

The Sony 85mm f1.8 is maybe THE lens in the Sony lineup that gives best value for money. Lightweight, sharp, almost distortion free - to mention some aspects. As others, I have traded a lot of GM lenses over the years, but the 85 1.8 stays. It handles 61 mp very well.

As far as image quality Sigma 90i over Samyang 75 or Sony 1.8/85.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the input. Reassuring to hear the 85 is still quite solid.

I do find the f1.8 aperture useful for the kind of shooting I do, so not really considering the Sigma.

Just placed an order for the Sony 85mm and looking forward to it!
