p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony a9 real-time tracking back af issues

Hi,

I have been using a9 for a number of years. I have noticed when I use real time tracking af with my sigma 35mm f1.2, with bright high contrast background like foliage and a back lit face, the a9 will focus on the leaves instead of the face even though it shows a green face detect box on the face in viewfinder.

Anyone has this issue? I am not sure if it is lens dependent and if changing to the Sony 35mm Gm might help.

Because of this I have switch to a movable spot focus which is more reliable.

Upz. Anyone has this issue? Been bothering me on the past few vacations and I am wondering if the 35mm Gm on the a9 might work better?

Probably not. It isn't the lens making these decisions. Cameras generally don't like focusing on something dark. The new bodies with the AI chip (A7RV or A9III) would probably help, they can to some degree "understand" that it is a face, even if it is dark and backlit. Expensive solution, though. You can always go old school and fall back to a small AF area without tracking, though that will cumbersome in comparison. I believe many photogs have a button programmed to do that quickly, should the need arise.
