This is at a nest in Spiller's Cove, near Twillingate, Newfoundland, at the top of a narrow sea stack. It was extremely windy and rainy, and Mom was eating the fish that Dad had just brought. So, the larger chick decided to take the opportunity to practice flying, by just hovering in the (high!) wind above the nest, while the smaller chick looked on in perhaps envy or puzzlement. I have no idea if the hovering chick would have had enough flying ability to get back to the nest if an extra gust of wind had taken it away, but it sure looked very risky!
