Any regrets for people who upgraded / downgraded? I've got one on order and it should be showing up soon. But basically I'm a cheap bastard and try to minimize owning depreciating assets. I'm coming from an a7Riv and really happy with it, but do have some limitations that I think the Rv will help with. When I upgraded from the a7III to the Riv it cost about $1000 to make the move. I thought that upgrade was totally worth it as it made all my lenses better. I'm not expecting as dramatic an upgrade with this and it will cost I'm guessing around $1200 to upgrade.

If I hold off a year or so I would expect the differential in used prices between the Riv and Rv to drop, but there is an unmeasurable value in being able to use a camera you enjoy.

So what are your thoughts on your upgrade to the Rv?

Coming from the a7R III, absolutely no regrets. I feel I have great lenses that are even better on the a7R V.

I have not even shot my a7R III since picking up the V at launch.

At that price, I don't think it will be a depreciating asset for a long time .

No regrets. I have to fight a small battle with LEDs but i get through it. Other than that its a damn good cam with great IQ

But bottom line maybe the best overall Sony yet. It’s got almost everything one could need and should last awhile in your hands.

Two best features, for me... automated focus stacking, and the cover for the sensor when a lens is removed. I got an R3 in 2017 and an R4 in 2019. It's hard to think of any significant improvements I'd like, tho less rolling shutter would occasionally be helpful. I'm a landscape shooter.

Coming from an A7R II this thing makes me feel like I’ve emerged from the Stone Age.

I was on the fence about upgrading, but with the deal and an upcoming big trip, I couldn't say no.
Coming from the A7R4, I'm definitely enjoying all the benefits, but to be really nitpicky of a wishlist:

- Better low light autofocus. It's noticeably better, but I was hoping for a larger jump
- Auto subject recognition mode between all types, it's okay if it's not as good as specifically choosing one
- Auto EFCS switch above something like 1/2000s. Or at least let us have this as a button or option in the shutter type setting.
- Quieter mechanical shutter (full and EFCS) like the x-t4
- Deeper buffer with my slow SD cards: main buffer benefits are with faster cards. For really slow cards, the uncompressed RAW buffer goes from 31 to 39. I think Lossless Compressed L may help?
- Faster sensor readout speed (maybe a LQ line skipping mode for silent shutter stills?) and FPS
- Maintaining similar size/weight as A7R4, it's a bit thicker/heavier
- Remove the 3rd party battery delayed popup warning message
- Limited AF in Clear Image Zoom (specific for video usage), A7CR improved on this

Features from other brands:
- Hyper Program mode from Pentax (basically a mode that lets you easily switch between Av and Tv depending on which dial you use. Like program shift but it locks either aperture or shutter and doesn't change with the light)
- Canon's manual focus aid. With the focus map feature on Sony it seems possible, even if at a coarse resolution.
- Handheld multishot like Olympus
- Digital level data written to EXIF like Phase One
- Auto EFCS is on Nikon and Fuji

Also came from A7R IV, no regrets. Upgrades in screen, CFexpress card write speed vs SD card, menu operability, etc. are wonderful.

As much as they are and not cheap for sure but moving to the CFexpress cards is really nice. For me its uploading ability to computer as more the asset. Shooting never hit the buffer yet

The new camera was $2900 and I'm guessing I might get $1700 for the old one. Newer cameras pretty much always depreciate.

Tim, I think I've seen some of your waterfall shots taken with pixel shift. What do you tend to use more the pixel shift or the focus stacking?

I think from this list the auto EFCS and digital level data to exif would be the thing I would like the most.

I think the A7Rv coming down off $3900 is expectable but I doubt it will plummet on the used market like the A7Riv did. The v is a solid upgrade in several areas. The A1 slammed the A7Riv some. I doubt the A1ii will hurt the A7Rv much. It will add features from the A7Rv but be expensive, too.

I have been using V60 speed cards, I haven't overrun the buffer on the Riv, but the transfer speed into the computer is the biggest issue. I'm hoping the faster USB speed on the camera will help with this, but I may already be at the limit of the card. I currently use 256GB, If I were to upgrade I'm thinking 320GB for the CFexpress. I think I will wait for pricing to get better on those. As it is now I just start downloading and walk away.

Hehe, yes - I just wanted to say that $2900 is an amazing price and I don't see A7RV depreciating quickly to that level once this promotion ends... but who knows.

The CF express will run 800 read and 700 write for the card itself. Going to need a card reader for that to handle those speeds. I have a M1 Mac that is loaded and it’s very quick.

Not sure of the Max speeds of V60 cards but i tend to think maybe 200 read/writes. No question the Type A cards are really fast. I dont really need that speed for shooting but upload to computer as i typically have 4K at once processing tasks. Which takes a lot of horsepower. I like the build of the cards better too but again these things are not cheap. Id at least get some V90 cards as the read/writes are 300 or so

Need to check my numbers i could be off a little on V60/V90

Pixel shift, honestly I haven’t even tried the focus stacking yet. I need to give that a try.

Absolutely zero regret i came from the R3 to R4 and then the R5. Best camera ever used. That flip screen, focus stacking, better ibis, faster processor, better menu and much better focus lock this camera has literally everything one could want. 👌
