Just finished a 3 week visit to Kyoto, Japan (visiting family and a few small trips) and had decided to make it a goal to visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove at sunrise. The MIL lives only 20 minutes away and I had been wanting to put this one on our wall at home minus tourists. This also justified with the wife the need to pack a tripod and a few additional lenses in our luggage!

I was able to run into a photo journalist from France on assignment at the west entrance around sunrise the first morning and had a good chat about life, travel, and photography.

The one thing that can be said is that can be culled (as they are there normally), used for something at many levels of structure, usage and beauty. and in the end can/will self replace in a relatively short time.

As to the individual who did it, well at minimum deportation with no return. They wanted to be special so then they will be.

There has been an increase of this behavior occuring all over the world.

Agreed that it breaks your heart to see such beauty disgraced like this. This was one of several I saw here.

Some of these writings have dates that go back many years, which is sad.

The whole Arashiyama area is a great place to visit. Just visit earlier in the day if you want to take photos and not be crushed by the wave of tourists!

Also, add the Katsura Imperial Villa to your list if you want to see an amazing Japanese garden, this is a hidden gem of the area that does not get much attention from foreign visitors.
