I recently learned to love 135mm.
Still have 135GM, Zeiss 135 2.8 C/Y.
Sold Samyang 135 1.8 as there is simply not enough space for several 135mm lenses. Decided to go with better focusing 135GM, however I preferred images from Samy a little bit more.
Admire images from Batis 135 but again there is just not enough space for another 135.

Many very good 135 options, but as you wrote, how many 135s can one own. Ha! I've been through a few myself to include:

-The original Samyang 135/2 Amazing price value and super surprising IQ
-The Grandad of them all, the Zeiss 135/2 but I prefer the bad-ass designed and build quality of the Milvus 135/2 over the classic. *Would love to see the Zeiss Milvus line revived in L-Mount 🙏🏼
-And of course the GM 70-200II at 135mm ( had to be said 😉 )

Adapted lenses too?? That makes it 10x harder.

Either the 1000mm Rubinar, Sony 500mm mirror or Tamron SP 500mm
Zeiss Loxia 21mm
Zeiss Batis 85
Zeiss Batis 40 CF
Minolta 58mm 1.2

But if I could keep my dozens of legacy glass somewhere in storage, i'd add:

35mm 2.8
Zeiss 16-35 and would quickly replace the 16-35 with the 16-35 GM1.

Honestly, if I were restricted to 5 lenses, i'd be looking a lot harder at the GM zooms to do a lot of the heavy lifting and a couple of Loxia lenses for fun. Not sure i'd be completely happy with 5 that I already own if I had to dump the rest!

3 for my A7Riv:
24/1.4 GM (need to buy it, now I have the Samy)
50/1.2 GM (need to re-buy it, a "special" lens)
135/2.8 Batis (in the post)

2 for my A7c:
CV 40/1.2SE (love it)
Sigma 90/2.8i

one as a bonus:
Sirui 35mm T2.9 Anamorphic for when I feel "cinematic"

Batis 18 (or Loxia 21)
Sony 24-70 GMII
Sony 85 1.4 GM
Sony 70-200 GMII
Sony 135 1.8 GM

and I'd rent a long lens for wildlife trips ;-)

I recently reviewed my historical portraits by lens in the longer FL's. My favorite longer lenses have been the Sigma 105mm f1.4 and GM 135mm f1.8. I was rather amazed at how well my GM 70-200mm f2.8 II rendered in the 135mm range compared to the other lenses. I will be using this lens a lot more in the future for portrait work. This lens never ceases to amaze me with how good it is!

Today my picks would be…
Sony 16-35 PZ
Sony 20-70
Sony 70-200 f/4 II
Sony 40mm f/2.5
Lensbaby Sol

Ask in few months it might be different. I would love a COMPACT 35mm f/1.8 or f/2 instead of the 40mm but I don’t see anything I’m looking for. It is puzzling to me that Sony didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to release a new compact lens with they announced the a7CII and a7CR.

Fun times! There are lots of choices these days. I remember back when Sony only had the 55/1.8 and 35/2.8 autofocus lenses. Haha!

During that time, Zeiss offered some awesome manual focus lenses like the Loxia 35/2 (Biogon) and 50/2 (Planar).

Many of us had these lenses at one point.

35GM
Rokkor 58/1.2
50GM
Contax 100/2
135GM

I might waffle on the Rokkor vs the Meyer 58/1.9. The Rokkor is more versatile. The Meyer is more distinctive.

Well, I only own five lenses - including the 1.4x converter - so:

- 20-70 f/4
- 70-200 f/4
- 100-400 f/4.5-f/5.6
- 40 f/2.5
- 1.4x converter

That pretty much satisfies everything I want from 20 - 560 (840 in APS mode).

I'd like to add a fast 14mm for nighttime photography.

I'm down to 5 lenses right now for my A1-

Viltrox 16mm f/1.8
Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM
24-70mm f/2.8 GM II
70-200mm f/2.8 GM II
200-600 G + 1.4X

I sold my 24-70 and replaced it with a 20-70, but regrettered it and picked up another 24-70 GM II. I also replaced my 20 G with the Viltrox 16mm. With a 1.4X this covers 16-840mm and about anything I would want to shoot.

Did you regret swapping the 24-70 for the 20-70 because of image quality differences or because of the loss of f2.8?

Thanks again, Fred! I still remember a night landscape (Eastern Sierra mountains?) you posted back when, taken with the Loxia 50 -- soon after, I got the Loxia 35, then the Loxia 21, and never looked back! I love the tonality of the modern Zeiss MF and AF lenses.

Nice variety of lenses in the responses. Would be interesting to have a table with the stats for each. (but I don't volunteer to create it )

Totally agree. It’s my favorite lens now. I like it even more than the 50/1.2, which is quite a statement since the 50 is incredible. But that 70-200GM II is soooo good and sooo flexible!

Sony FE

Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL
Zeiss Loxia T* 21mm f/2.8 Distagon
Voigtländer 35mm f/2 APO-Lanthar
Voigtländer 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar
Sony 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS

Leica M

Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL
Voigtländer 21mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar II
Voigtländer 35mm f/1.5 Nokton II
Voigtländer 50mm f/1.5 Nokton II
Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5 Nokton
Leica 135mm f/3.4 APO-Telyt

Fujifilm X

Fujinon 8mm f/3.5 R WR
Fujinon 16mm f/2.8 R WR
Fujinon 23mm f/2 R WR
Fujinon 50mm f/2 R WR
Fujinon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR

I prefer primes due to how I concentrate when choosing just one focal length, and I would visit the same location over multiple occasions, but each time with just one of the lenses. It gets a bit complicated when getting in to the telephoto range, so here I usually choose a light zoom that reaches to about 300mm. I usually make a gap between 1.5 and 2x. Don't need fast lenses, though I probably would choose some on Leica, as they are very light.

I currently use Sony FE, but I mention Leica M and Fujifilm X, as I'm in a bit of a dilemma currently, and I consider either getting in to one of these systems as well, or completely switch. That's another story. I prefer the haptics of the latter systems, and desire something lighter, but I occasionally want autofocus as well. With Architecture and abstracts of mentioned is my primarily focus, but I also enjoy landscape, macro of insects, wildlife, and sometimes photograph my family members (mainly my nieces) (would prefer autofocus for the two latter ones).

in this order

20-70mm f4
20-40mm f2.8
35-150 Tmaster
10-18 aps-c lens in FF mode
50mm f1.8

there is a ton of overlap and I've accepted it. I simply enjoy these lenses, and can definitely shrink the list, but I would keep these.

many many lenses would go before these, and it would be sad to part ways, so I havent done it yet.

The 20-70 is a very nice lens, but after further consideration on how often I use the wide end, I opted for the larger aperature of the 24-70 GM II.

Ooh that's a bold statement haha, my 50 1.2 is still my favorite, but I replaced my 135GM with the 70-200GM II and it is flipping amazing. That being said, f/1.2 is f/1.2, and it hasn't overtaken the 50GM yet
